Finally, with Boeing’s proposed Boeing 797 there will be an aircraft that all passengers are going to love.
The aerospace giant is expected to launch what will be called the 797 at this year’s Farnborough Air Show in July and it will have economy seating of just 2-3-2 with huge overhead luggage bins.
The economy seat squeeze will finally be over!
The 797 will be a revolutionary aircraft made of composite material like the 787 and it will be able to economically connect hundreds of new non-stop routes between smaller cities.

They need to be careful that a twin aisle aircraft doesn't encroach on the 787-8. They need s 200-250 spread aircraft that in large version will give the economics of the A321Neo and the range and field performance of the 757-200. The smaller version needs to cover everything the 737-Max8/9 does at far lower cost.

Bit like the EMB170/190 but scaled up in terms of family commonality. The smaller one would be the big seller, but the larger one would allow 757 retirements and benefit from cost sharing with the smaller.

I've been saying for some time that what Boeing needs is a "767X". Basically a 767 fuselage (2-3-2) with a new composite wing, new engines, and updated avionics.

For a while in the mid-90s Airbus was optimising the A310 as a 757 competitor. Apparently they were getting quite close but they market wasn't responding, so they wandered off into building super-heavy long-rangers with even smaller markets.

Seems that they might have been on the right track, just 20 years early.

I share Wingnut's cynicism about the economy class squeeze finally being over. At the end of the day, in any aircraft, from 737 to A380, you are effectively renting floor space on a plane when you fly. Want more space, pay more; want to pay less, put up with limited space.

Likewise for airlines, the challenge is to arrange that floor space in a manner which maximises their revenue and profitability; that's why 10 abreast 777s are taking over from 9 abreast and why 9 abreast 787s are far more numerous than 8 abreast (still JAL only). All of these artists impressions of cosy interiors are marketing bumpf - not necessarily dishonest, because Boeing intended the 787 to be 8 abreast - but just not what their customers had in mind.

Airlines will look at the 797 as they look at any other aircraft: how can we optimise this space to get best return: attract high revenue pax and accommodate as many lower paying pax as safely possible. That's not going to change with the 797 (or any other aircraft).

According to their CEO, they'd like to be the launch customer. They do have a large inventory of aging 757s and 767s. New would be nice!

I suspect Pratt would only get in if GE said they weren't interested - Boeing and GE are pretty much tied at the hip these days.
That being said, we're probably looking at an engine in the 40k-45k range (which is a big hole right now - the newest being the PW2000 launched nearly 40 years ago). 40k or so wouldn't be a big stretch from the GTF on the A320 NEO (unlike their GTF proposal for the 777X - someone at GE calculate the size of the oil cooler they would need for a 100k GTF engine :eek::eek:). If they can get their current GTF sorted, it might happen...
