Nigeria's Dana Air blames passenger after door falls off - BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-42990141?ocid=socialflow_facebook)

From the article:

"The flight was noisy with vibrations from the floor panel. I noticed the emergency door latch was loose and dangling."

"When we landed and the plane was taxiing back to the park point, we heard a poof-like explosion, followed by a surge of breeze and noise. It was terrible."

My interpretation, for what it is worth, is that the door was secured only by internal pressure during the flight. The loose door latch made the rattle, and once pressure equalized on the ground, the door fell open.

According to this report
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/02/09/africa/dana-airlines-exit-door-falls-off/index.html

"We informed one of the air hostesses who insisted that it was locked". I think that air hostess needs to find another job .

It’s Nigeria fo heavens sake - ask anyone who has flown with a Nigerian airline!

You can expect all kinds of everything with Dana & Nigerian airlines.

Depending on the age, this aircraft may have had a cockpit indicator for an unlatch condition, and for NGs, the opening mechanism would have been disabled in flight.

It was an MD-83, not a 737.

It malfunctioned. On those it's the tailcone that's meant to fall off.

Richard Taylor.

That Dana ref. probably went over the heads of most people (not old enough).

Saw the tail cone fall off an MD80 at Cologne after pushback. I guess it fired when it was being armed.

Ah. That aircraft has warning lights for just about every other door, but not the overwing exits.

It seems doubtful the plug would just fall out after depressurization even if the lock pins were improperly rigged. Hardware failure maybe or more likely, somebody is not being truthful.

I think I'll just pull out this red handle and hang my back pack on it. There, perfect.
