This afternoon I attended the funeral of my neighbour, former MAEOp Ken Lucas. Over the 30 years I knew him, Ken rarely spoke of his career; I often tried to draw him out, but I got only snippets. But today I learned more. Ken joined the RAF in 1943 and retired age 60 after 42 years service. His last flying tour was on 51 Sqn and thereafter ATC and Ops. The eulogy mentioned a couple of interesting items: he once refused Douglas Bader permission to jump the queue in the landing circuit, resulting in a few strong words, but Ken was not one to be intimidated; on retirement he was apparently the most senior WO in HM Forces. A life that his family could be proud of.
