If you have a full Instrument Rating but only need an IR(R) for operational reasons is it possible to simply revalidate the IR(R) assumed within the full Instrument Rating or are the two ratings mutually exclusive?

The IR(R) doesn't really exist; it is simply an administrative fudge to allow the UK CAA to include the privileges of an IMC Rating in an EASA licence. The IMC Rating and the EASA IR are two entirely different qualifications.

You can get an IR(R) issued based on the last IR(A) revalidation, it will be valid for 25 months and is purely an administrative task.

I'm thinking of doing that. Presumably you can also cross-credit a multi pilot LPC and get an IR(R) revalidated by experience?

Apart from legacy UK ATPL(A) and UK CPL (A), the rules regarding the IMCR / IR(R) changed a while ago. The credit is now as follows:

An applicant who holds an ICAO IR(A) or military green Instrument Rating (Aeroplanes) and has passed a single-pilot IR test in the 24 months preceding the date of application for the IMC Rating / IR (Restricted) will be credited with a pass in the initial IMC Rating / IR (Restricted) Skill Test and the written examination. The applicant must apply for the issue of the IMC rating within 24 months of the last IR test passed.

The IMC Rating / IR (Restricted) will be valid for 25 months after the last day of the month in which the last IR test was successfully passed.

An IMCR / IR(R) may not be revalidated with any multi-pilot IR credit. So a multi pilot LPC would not be acceptable for the purpose; a pilot would need to follow normal IR(R) revalidation criteria.
