With surprise today, and given our recent run of incidents I read in the Gulf News that Emirates has been named "amongst the safest airlines on earth" (http://gulfnews.com/business/aviation/emirates-etihad-among-safest-airlines-for-2018-1.2153278) in the newly released tables from airlineratings.com.

In fact not only the Gulf News, Khaleej Times goes a step further saying "Emirates is the Worlds safest airline" (https://www.khaleejtimes.com/business/aviation/emirates-is-worlds-safest-airline).

However foreign press (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/The-worlds-safest-airlines-revealed/) mention the fact that Emirates and have fallen out of the top 20 altogether.....

Has the local spin doctor gone into overdrive or am I missing the mark here myself?

I stand to be corrected...

They are absolutely the safest airline ‘on Earth’

It’s a different story when the planes get airborne....

Maybe the tragic events of today may queer the pitch a little. A mechanic fell to his death from a freighter this morning.

That's very sad.

I wondered why the catering & others working around the a/c at high level don't wear fall harnesses like they do in many other countries. Cost?

Except perhaps something may change since it's not a cleaner/caterer but engineer (?). Horrible thought but there it is

He fell from the cargo door when he was rushing to close it. They are supposed to use a safety net but typical EK there was "nil in stock"

The poor chap fell over the barrier that was fitted at a rear door on the main deck, and not the main deck cargo door. The exact circumstances are not yet confirmed, but stands are now being fitted at all open doors in the new hangars.
There was a broadcast from SVP Engineering, which was worded very well.
He left behind a wife and two children, and was by all accounts a hard working chap who had been here for 17 years.
One hopes that the lessons that are learnt, are not forgotten from this tragic and avoidable event.
