Let's get the New Year off to a start with this....

An Edinburgh Napier University lecturer watched his friend plunge to his death from a moving train after the pair realised they were on the wrong train - and decided to JUMP off.

Fabian Galama, 53, and his Dutch friend Erik Suidman, 51, were travelling by train to Agra on the last leg of a two-week journey in western India on Tuesday.

But the pair mistakenly boarded an Express to New Delhi and decided to jump off the train as it left the platform.

Fabian jumped first and escaped with minor injuries - but Erik suffered fatal head injuries after he lost his balance as he jumped and landed inches from the track.

Sydney Smith, notable Anglican clergyman of the early 19th century, was told of an elderly duke who had married a young woman, but had failed to produce the necessary heir. "How strange. I always thought that was the purpose of domestic chaplains."

The point is that having procreated already does not disqualify one from an award. The way the Darwin Awards website rules page (http://darwinawards.com/rules/rules1.html) puts it:
The existence of offspring, though potentially deleterious to the gene pool, does not disqualify a nominee. Children inherit only half of each parent's genetic material and thus have their own chance to survive or snuff themselves. If, for instance, the offspring has inherited the "Play With Combustibles" gene, but also has inherited the "Use Caution When..." gene, then she is a potential innovator and asset to the human race. Therefore, each nominee is judged based on whether or not she has removed her own genes, without consideration to the number of offspring or, in the case of an elderly winner, the likelihood of producing more offspring.
More here (http://darwinawards.com/rules/rules.children.html).

The desire to make a spectacular shot on his birthday played a cruel joke with a 39-year-old resident of Turkey - during the jump he could not stand on his feet and fell off a 20-meter rock, IHA reports . A friend took off the last seconds of Khalil Dag's life on video.

The tragic incident occurred on the first day of the coming year in Sanliurfa. After a short walk, the telephone company manager invited his comrades to climb the ruins of the fortress of Urfa, from where a beautiful view of the city and the Great Mosque opens. Here Khalil, the father of eight children, decided to demonstrate his dexterity by jumping off a one and a half meter high cliff. Landing on the ground, he could not keep his balance, fell to the left side and rolled off the 20-meter rock.

Witnesses of the incident were not only his friends, but also the visitors of a nearby cafe. They were the first to come to the aid of the birthday boy and summoned doctors to the place, but he could not save the seriously injured man - he died on the way to the hospital.

What would be the point of killing the snake?
Once they 'have control' of the snake, it's a simple enough job to remove it from proximity to humans. Or was the idea to punish it for biting a superior being?

Most snakebites occur when people try to kill snakes. The next most occur when people try to catch them. There's no shortage of public information on how to treat snakebite, but it has to be done quickly. Surely we all have a responsibility to learn a bit of basic first aid.

Some friends of mine moved house from Cornwall to Mid-Wales a few years ago. Their cat hated going in a car, so they went to the vet and obtained a sedative, and with the aid of this they managed to get the cat into it's travelling basket and into his car (his wife was driving their other car, so he was on his own with the cat). Just before he got to the Bristol junction on the M5 North, the cat came around. It managed to release the catch on the basket and leapt at the back of my friend's head, spitting with fury, or fright.

Imagine the scene, he's trying to drive up the motorway, with a mad cat attacking his head and clawing at his face from behind. Eventually he managed to get on to the hard shoulder and stop the car, got the cat off his head, but couldn't get it back in the basket. He did manage to get out of the car, leaving the cat inside, and walked to the nearest emergency phone.

I gather the request for a vet to sedate a mad cat that was running rampant inside his car was not easy to explain to the emergency operator.............

Sometimes Google ad choices or whatever PPRune uses for the top of page add makes unwarranted assumptions:

Saw an add for "meet a shelter pet" while reading about the cat wreaking havoc in the car.

Another great example was an add for drones while reading the thread on drone/aircraft encounters.

True, but it greatly reduces the probability of you dying.
On the other hand, if you do nothing for 40 minutes while you're driven to hospital, you stand a good chance of dying if the snake has envenomated.

Can't understand why so much cycling kit is black. My winter cycling jacket is a very bright orange, my helmet an almost luminescent green. No doubt they clash, but who cares, they are visible. In the summer I wear a white or light coloured t-shirt.

Long while ago when had a job where I could cycle to work I had very garish outfit, fluorescent everything.

A coworker asked a (to me dumb) question:
"do you really want to be seen dressed like that"

I thought the answer was obvious "Being seen is the whole point"

I will admit the black shoes with bright green laces probably did not add much visibility but they did complete the 'look'.

I'm surprised this hasn't made it here:

Tesla in fatal California crash was on Autopilot - BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43604440)

The accident (?) happened just a couple of miles from my house, where highways 101 and 85 diverge. The car pool (leftmost) lane also diverges, with a flyover to reconnect it to 85. The Tesla drove itself into a concrete divider at full speed. The FDR-equivalent showed that he had been warned several times about hands-off driving. Presumably he was texting or playing a game and completely not paying attention. Interestingly, Tesla made the comment that their "autopilot" deliberately ignores stationary objects so it doesn't come to a halt at every over-bridge.

I think this technology has a way to go yet. So far the Tesla has only killed its own drivers, but inevitably it will (like the Uber) end up killing a third party.

The corpse of Father Adelir Antonio de Carli was spotted by a tugboat at sea near the city of Macae, three months after he disappeared while flying on a chair buoyed by balloons over the Atlantic Ocean in a fund-raising stunt.

"We were almost certain that it was the priest due to various elements, such as the clothes and material used in the balloon trip," Macae's chief of police, Daniel Bandeira, said. DNA tests confirmed the man's identity

The priest disappeared on April 20 after he called friends from his mobile phone to say he was about to crash into the ocean.

Each was on the opposite side of the tracks when a Hackensack man and woman met in the middle Wednesday afternoon -- and were struck and killed by a commuter train, witnesses told investigators.

The 48-year-old woman "had just gotten off a bus on Main Street" around 1:10 p.m., a law enforcement official said.

The man, 51, "was waiting for her on the other side of the tracks," he said, adding that they apparently hadn't seen one another in awhile.

"They met in the middle of the tracks," he told Daily Voice. "An ambulance was nearby and they were laying on the air horn for them to get off the tracks because the train was coming."

Heard this one on the radio a few days ago, but obviously didn't have a link.
They had another candidate in the same radio story - 55 year old man pulled over and tried to move a rattlesnake from the middle road to save it (so it wouldn't get run over). Although he supposedly knew how to handle snakes, it managed to bite him on the hand so he transferred it to the other - at which time it bit him on that hand as well. Although they rushed him to the hospital he died from the two bites... Apparently no good dead goes unpunished with deadly snakes.

VP959, I remember reading a post or two about the most active users and forum activity statistics somewhere in the distant past, no idea where to find it now, but the gist of it was someone had recorded the most active users, guests and days over the years as the software was gradually updated, noting some counts being reset at various dates. Apparently there have been a few resets of those counts as software versions are changed or forums are modified, so I'd be fairly confident saying that the figures about most active users and guests only goes back within a certain timeframe, maybe only a couple of years since the last statistics reset rather than back to the origin of PPrune

Not being an expert on the software being used, I can't say for sure, but I would think that personal statistics may not be affected as things such as individual post counts and join dates etc can readily be recalculated when the database containing the users and posts is parsed during the setup of the software, whereas global usage figures could be separate data that may or may not be retained, depending on how the system is organised and the people doing the setup.

However, it's the sub-categories that can be more, well, enlightening and often contain more aspiring candidates, thus this contender deserves a worthy mention..... whilst .giving a whole new meaning to "twisting the night away "......

It's the bit at the end about being taken to hospital " with a good prognosis ".....this is always reassuring to learn after all....that adds a touch of class really.

I was told an Essex tale, about two people having sex in a lay-by in the back seat of a car, when the man was seized with a terrible muscle spasm that trapped the woman beneath him.

The Fire Department finally had to use the "jaws of life" to chop off the top of the car to free him. As the ambulance was taking him away a fireman told the somewhat distraught woman not to worry, that he would be fine. She told him that, really, she was trying to think what to tell her husband about what had happened to their car.

I had a girlfriend who had an early Mini turned into a convertable in the late 1980s. It tended to attract some daft questions so we took to telling people we'd got stuck in a compromising position in the back seat and that the rescue crew had to cut the roof off to get us out. We would tell them that rather than waste an otherwise good mini, we had it reinforced and a soft top made for it...

Happened in next village to me a few years back. Two really dumb teenagers, car in garage for privacy, cold night, engine and heater on for warmth, one dead, one brain-damaged.

A more recent girlfriend told me her mother had "died in an accident in a car".
The peculiar phrasing was misleading but accurate; when she was sixteen, several years after her father died in Vietnam, her mother and a local married real estate agent died of CO poisoning in a car in an enclosed garage in a West Virginia winter. She was a strange fish that one...

Stare straight at whatever it is you think you might hit, such as an oncoming vehicle when you've somehow ended up in the wrong lane, or that tree at the edge of the road when you think you can't make it around a curve. Do not look away, at where you might want to go. Just keep staring at what you are going to hit.

I was just visiting some friends in the village who told me about a kid from their extended family, 20 years old, just got his motorcycle license, who went out riding in the Sauerland with a group of bikers, just to get some practice in. (The Sauerland is a region with a lot of curving roads, known for lots of accidents. It's also where the Dambusters raids took place.)

Nobody knows exactly why, but the kid went out into the left lane (right-hand traffic) on a right-hand curve and collided head-on with another biker. The other biker died on the spot, and his passenger and the kid are now both in hospital with severe injuries. When the kid awoke from his induced coma he had to ask if he'd been in a motorcycle accident. I would bet that the kid followed the advice, above, straight from the Emperor Mong.

It would seem that the Emperor Mong is a real fan of Charles Darwin; he's so helpful in proving Darwin's theory of evolution, doing such good work for him in the shallow end of the gene pool.

Back in the 1960s, while based at Catterick, I had a Lambretta 125 Starstream and used to commute to and from Liverpool with it each weekend. My route took me across the Pennines toward Harrogate on, I think, the A59 which was not a very wide road. Frequently, in the middle of nowhere, (there's a lot of that on that road!) I would encounter cars coming in the opposite direction with drivers who thought the white line in the centre of the road was purely for decoration. When I saw one coming along the centre line, I would aim my scooter at the oncoming headlights. The fact I am able to write this today is testament to how effective that drastic measure turned out to be.

We were all Darwin candidate in Nigeria, but one of us was a stand-out because he bought a nice, new Honda 125 that he used for cruisin' and boozin'.

Night falls quickly 6º above the equator and it caught him one evening almost home, almost except for this car at the side of the road just short of the compound that was showing one parking light, which he took for the nearside one except that it was parked on the right so that ... never mind, just go left of it and .... He went up the sloping bonnet of a one-eyed, left-eyed VW Beetle, and right over the top to land in the road behind it almost unharmed. "God looks after fools and drunkards," indeed. The little Honda, though, now had the shortest wheelbase ever, and negative rake too.

We in the bar would razz him about this until he lost his rag and went flouncing off to his pit. That lasted almost a week, and then another Darwin candidate did something equally daft for us to focus upon.

Two people are dead following a vehicle collision Sunday morning on Interstate 5 that led to a fight between the two drivers.

The vehicles struck each other in the northbound lanes of I-5 around 3:44 a.m., according to Mike Zerfas, California Highway Patrol public information officer.

The two drivers, both male, then drove farther north on the freeway, stopped near Del Paso Road, exited their vehicles and began to fight, Zerfas said. One of the drivers was killed in the fight after suffering what appears to be blunt force trauma. Then the second driver, walking north on the freeway, was struck and killed by a passing motorist.

“It escalated from a traffic collision to a fight to a homicide,” Zerfas said.

CHP investigators immediately arrived on the scene, where both men were pronounced dead.

Disagree, here's their 'manifesto':“I don’t buy it. Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own—it’s easier to dismiss an opinion as abhorrent than strive to understand it. Badness exists, sure, but even that’s quite rare. By and large, humans are kind. Self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes, but kind. Generous and wonderful and kind. No greater revelation has come from our journey than this.” Just before they pedaled into ISIS held whatever-stan

I consider this shallow gene pool thinking to be very Darwinian. I would say that most if not all of their friends, and all of their relatives tried to talk them out of this part of the plan.

Decides to cycle through Tajikistan. Gets murdered by ISIS.

Rod Liddle, in this weeks Spectator, has his own view on this...

The story of Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan is an interesting one, I think, for what it tells us about the right, the left and human nature. These two youngish people — both 29, one of them a vegan, the other a vegetarian — jacked in their wonkish jobs in Washington DC in order to experience the world in all its glory. Their itinerary included dangerous areas — or at least areas deemed dangerous by western governments with an axe to grind. As Jay put it: ‘People, the narrative goes, are not to be trusted. People are bad. People are evil. I don’t buy it. Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own… By and large, humans are kind. Self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes, but kind. Generous and wonderful and kind.’

But in a sense it was only after the couple had been stabbed to death by Isis maniacs near the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border that the story really began. It was immediately taken up by the conservative right as the quintessence of millennials’ credulousness and stupidity, their fatal misapprehensions about the world, their epic delusions. Everyone I have told their story to has guffawed — and then, having wiped the tears from their eyes, looked slightly ashamed and said something like: ‘Ah, yes, ummm… not really that funny, is it?’

This is presumably a societal norm kicking in, something we have all been taught. It’s not quite decent to laugh at the horribly murdered. Fair enough, I suppose — but I think the laughter was the genuine reaction and that fact, by itself, rather abruptly disproves Jay’s thesis. Incidentally, I was alerted to the story by my friend and Sunday Times colleague Camilla Long, who commented only: ‘A vegan and a vegetarian… never mind Isis, imagine the tension!’ I laughed long and loud at this until a semblance of civility kicked in and I stopped. Then I told lots of other people, pretending that it was a desperately sad story rather than something to make you laugh mordantly.

The lefties took a very different approach, but one which will have surely become familiar to you. They denied the substance of the story outright. That, they said, is not what happened at all. It is fake news, a fabrication.

Everything the left doesn’t like is fake news — and they will always attempt to demonstrate this point with recourse to that most meretricious of modern inventions, the so-called ‘fact check’. You should never believe everything you read in the newspapers or hear on a radio broadcast, but be especially sceptical when it comes under the heading Fact Check. It will be cherry-picked stats handed down by some tenth-rate academic determined to prove his or her point of view, but presented as if it’s the word of either God or pristine science: the two being, for the secular left, coterminous.

The provisional wing of the Deluded Liberal Army, the BBC, has a regular fact-check thing and is able to prove every week that Brexit is a disaster and there is no genocide against white farmers in South Africa. In this case, the newspaper fact-checkers insisted that these two ill-fated millennials hadn’t ventured to Tajikistan to prove that the world was not a wicked place and that everyone was caring. Trawling through other stuff said by Jay Austin, they claimed the jaunt had been made purely from a sense of adventure. Well, maybe. But the couple’s blitheness in wandering through Tajikistan in the manner of Dora the Explorer was occasioned precisely by the belief that everyone is lovely really and nobody will hurt them. That is what killed them.

Truth is, though, I don’t think Jay and Lauren did entirely believe there was no wickedness in the world. Perhaps Jay meant that there is no wickedness except among the western imperialist establishment — Trump, the US, capitalism, colonialism and so on. It is us who have imposed wickedness upon cultures too militarily weak to allow their inherent goodness to shine through, bullied as they are by the West. This is an even graver delusion than the one the couple were accused of harbouring, but it has been terribly au courant for the past 20 years on university campuses, and among NGOs, the BBC and the left in general.

All evil in the world, the delusion runs, devolves directly from the West’s corrupt hegemony, its history and its traditions. Left free of western malefaction, the rest of the world would indeed be a beautiful and peaceable place. You can catch a whiff of this patent idiocy in the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust’s decision to fund a charity — Conflict Resolution Services Ireland — which has deep connections to IRA terrorism; or in the charities that cause chaos by trying to ship more ‘refugees’ to Europe every day, thus ensuring that more and more die while trying to come here.

And it is there in almost every pronouncement made by Jeremy Corbyn — his support for the brutal dynastic dictatorship of Cuba and the catastrophic and now vicious regime in Venezuela; his hand held out in supplication to Iran; his support for IRA terrorists and the genocidal maniacs of Hamas and Hezbollah; his refusal to criticise either Putin’s Russia or Brezhnev’s Soviet Union. We are the source of the madness in the world. Everywhere else is perfectly OK. It’s a belief system based largely upon a weird form of self-loathing, a denial of all the available evidence, a kind of psychosis.

I very much wish that Jay and Lauren had not been murdered by Islamist savages and were able to continue walking this earth in a state of happy oblivion to reality, munching their nuts and berries. But the world is not as they thought it was. It is a different place, a fatally different place.
