pickle=jettison?

Does anyone know the origin of pickling? I was just wondering how jettisoning your load became known as pickling it.

Gee I hope theres something interesting behind this so I can impress all the women at the bar.;)

The jettison buttons used to be green and lumpy...therefore to jettison the load became known as "biffing the pickle", which eventually was abridged to "pickle".

It is my understanding that it has nothing to do with the color or the texture but it is the shape. The bomb release (by the bombardier) was shaped somewhat like a pickle and the release button was at one end. Hence the bombardier pickled or released the bombs by pressing the button (switch). At least this is true for US Aircraft of WWII vintage.

And what is wrong with the Hooligan Navy. I spent six years in that service and I never saw anyone looking out of a port hole trying to spot whales or any inference that there was a golden rivet somewhere in the deep recess of the ship. I know because I checked.

Boy, you guys sure grabbed this one and took off with it, if nothing else this comfirms all of us heli-pilots have a bit twisted view of things.

Im sorry but I guess that I havent really done my research, I never heard of the CG being referred to as the hooligan navy. Are some of you still holding a grudge from prohibition?

Anyways as I understand it, whoever looks best in a wig doesn't really do much dancing because the rest of the crew is fighting over who gets to dance. And by then the winner is usually not coordinated enough to dance. :rolleyes:

It was the US Navy that coined the phrase as a means of demeaning the Coast Guard. I don’t know when the phrase was originally used but by the time I went in (1947) I was aware of the term. Incidentally, on one ship that I served on we had a black dog named “Hooligan”. We were based immediately adjacent to a US Navy PC and they pitched a big party and we were invited. To get back at the Navy one of the crews’ wives created a set of dress blues for the dog. His nails were painted red and ba**s were painted gold. Hooligan accompanied the crew to the party. We thought it was funny but it caused a stir with the Navy officers aboard the PC. Our skipper also thought it was funny.
