Sqn.Ldr. Payne died 18th November 2017 aged 88. He served with numerous squadrons, 16, 214, 90, 55, & 57. As QFI he instructed at 4 FTS. A fine officer and a true gentleman.

Although it was over 50 years ago, I remember him as my Flight Commander on 57 at Marham, my first Squadron. I only flew with him once, on 7 June 1966 in Victor BK1a XH591. It was a short ferry flight from Marham to Honington, from where we were operating at the time whilst the Marham runway was being resurfaced. It was an interesting time on the Squadron - we had a 50th Anniversary celebration and the Squadron Commander, Des Hall, decided to anticipate the Release To Service of the Mk 17 Hose Drum Unit and seriously damaged both aircraft when he lost his probe when the (96 feet) hose misbehaved.
