Taxi way lighting

It is 20 years since I last operated out of Heathrow. At that time, taxi instructions consisted of " follow the green lights, stop at red cross bars" Minimal R/T chat, brilliantly simple, and virtually fool proof. ( even I could cope)
I have since heard that because other airfields did not have a similar system, this had to be dropped, as it was deemed "non standard". True or false?

Pretty sure Dubai have a very similar system (maybe exactly the same?) based on Heathrow?

Long ago a DC8 went off the end of (what was) 28R in fog and ended up amongst a load of cabbages in an allotment. Apparently he had been told "follow the greens"!

Follow the Greens is expanding around the world and heavily promoted by one or two airport infrastructure firms. No need to instruct a flight to stop at a red stop bar - anyone who crosses a lit stop bar should never be allowed to drive an aircraft again, given the danger of being t-boned - it's Piloting 101.
