I have held a UK EASA class 1 medical for many years now, and renewed it with the same AME who has just retired. He has only taken a blood sample once, on my medical after turning 40. Every other renewal he hasn't taken any. Some people I speak to have a blood sample every renewal, others don't. Does anyone know why this is, and how I go about keeping not having blood taken every year, as I utterly hate it! Many thanks

I think you mean revalidation rather than renewal. For Class 1, a haemoglobin test is required in every examination under CAA rules.

Revalidate or renew an EASA medical certificate | UK Civil Aviation Authority (http://www.caa.co.uk/Commercial-industry/Pilot-licences/Applications/Medical/Revalidate-or-renew-an-EASA-medical-certificate/)

I'm not a big fan either but have had one with every single revalidation.

Haemoglobin test is mandatory for each revalidation/renewal and if you did not have one every time then that was not correct.
