BBC: Ukraine military arms dump explodes

A big fire raged at a military arms depot in the Vynnytsya region of central Ukraine, prompting the evacuation of more than 28,000 people.

Explosions continued for hours at the dump, where a reported 188,000 tonnes of munitions were stored. Officials said sabotage could not be ruled out.

.... sounds suspicious, especially when only a few months ago this happened...

There were many cases like this in post-USSR countries. Very often the cause was quite trivial. Semi-criminal corrupted logistics servicemen, having sold a lot of ammunition and light weapons, initiated fire to cover the absence of sold items. While the intent was to put on wire only one-two small buildings, the fire obviously got uncontrolled and "ate up" the whole territory also reaching warhouses with heavy weapons, munitions and bombs, and "show began".... Do not mean that this is so in this particular case, but precedents exist.

Didn't something similar happen to the Donnington depot years ago?

Yeah, there's no way it could have been due to external influences. Munitions dumps go up all the time.

Semi-criminal - You are or you aren't.

Pretty honest
Usually truthful
Reasonably careful

Lots of adverbs and adjectives that should not be used.

But from time to time lies
Sometimes lies
Occasionally takes risks, justified or not

When then the crew of a Vulcan baled out over Valley back in the 60s its 'inventory' was written off. This of course included things like wheel spats and engine blanks that were safely in a shed somewhere. I also heard the odd filing cabinet and metal cabinet were lost in the crash too :)

Yep, some of the Jags used to crash for good reason, they would fail to get airborne with the stuff they were purportedly carrying.

The Atlantic Conveyor sinking was an inventory holders dream.

And the ISO container jettisoned by a Chinook in the Falklands apparently containing nearly 40 tons of inventory items.

The Atlantic ConveyorI seem to remember being a civi ship it had a bar which was extensively tested on the way South and quite a lot of cheques were written... cheques that were in the safe and are currently residing at the bottom of the South Atlantic too.

A Lighter Note

Thought I would end this on a lighter note, an urban myth perhaps, but a good one.
Because it was not absolutely clear what stores were on board, it was said for years after the sinking, every enterprising Quartermaster (QM) in the British Army seized the opportunity and indented for equipment that supposedly ‘went down on the Atlantic Conveyor’
The amount of kit thus claimed would have been enough to fill several Atlantic Conveyors.
The best one I heard was that some old tentage, still on the books from Boer War, was finally written off as being lost on the Atlantic Conveyor!
