First sign of impending closure, or is it just an aspect of crew-room humour which will not go away?

It did cross my mind. :* Not an excessive distance.

Humour (Crew Room) "Laugh, things could be worse. So we laughed . . . . . Oh dear"

No, that's when they start building the swimming pool;)

Good news for Valley, but bad news for Linton On Ouse??

Surely the first indicator of closure is when there is an unseemly rush to carry out all the works services that have been outstanding since the year dot. The reason for this was that the PSA or whomsoever had to have its book clear when the place was finally closed!

Isn't that just the truth. Khormaksar was a classic example.

No the first sign is when they re-surface the runway.
What? They've just done it?
Or it could be building new hangars. They re-built the 4 x T2 hangars at Bovingdon then closed it the next year.

I always felt that there was something really rather 'Secondary Modern' about that Linton-on-Ouse place....

Just like Binbrook.
...ah yes, just like OC Eng, invited to take the wheel of the newly introduced 'rolablower' or some such new-fangled (early 80's) snowblower in MSFs recently resurfaced roads after a snowfall.... great.... right up to the point where the Chief pointed out that the 'snow' that was being cleared appeared to be black...,

And Honington: the traditional runway resurfacing, 13 Sqn's brand new multi-million pound RIC and recce-specialist HAS site (while IX Sqn's HAS site remained empty) and RB199 maintenance facility and associated 'hush house', followed by closure as a flying unit 18 months later...

The theory I heard was MOD authorise a major upgrade on a station, then next FY the beancounters say ' that station's costing too much so close it'.

And Wattisham for different reasons.

Hopefully the Stn will now address the blatant inequality that hinders spouses from getting work in the local community due to a lack of Welsh fluency. The RAF pumps in to the community finances; the least they can do in return is to recognise the circumstances and ensure that families don’t see one person out of work for the ‘privilege’ of a Valley tour.

Many years ago, when I was in Command Accounts at Brampton I put up a case for Valley being an overseas posting, on the grounds of kids having to learn Welsh, and lack of work for spouses. Failed miserably. Sorry

And when a Shackleton was flown in to be used for fireman training, who remembers the 'Save the Shackleton, Burn Valley' sticker campaign.

Was that near the Lightning sim and which formed part of the new Teesside Airport terminal building ?

They should have kept Brawdy and binned Valley. Never had a problem with the VietTaff down there.

Nope, just the awful weather factor!

28th Sep 2017, 14:36
Yet they chose Valley over Chivenor which has a far superior weather factor.

I have lived and flown at both so reasonably qualified to comment!

Now the army have ruined Brawdy by doing their usual and building fences all over it.

Brawdy was Royal Navy when we used to detach there for Micks and Mickey Finns. Oh what fun we had baiting the Matelots. They thought all the green bits were sea.

How is building fences "ruining" an airfield that's been disused for 25 years?

Not that it matters, it's closing in toto soon.

What a shame the improvements didn't include an Aircrew Feeding Facility like Marham.

BEagle
7th Oct 2017, 07:06
The flight line feeder was always very popular (but cramped) at Valley - and an excellent Aircrew Feeder was constructed at Brawdy in 1976 - right outside 234 / 63!

Even in V-force days, the catering facility in the Ops block at Scampton was known as the 'Feeder'.
