Major Heather Penney talked about her actions on September 11, 2001. Then a lieutenant, she was one of the first District of Columbia Air National Guard F-16 pilots scrambled from Andrews Air Force Base after the terrorist attacks. She described how she would have downed a civilian plane if necessary and why that would have been a suicide mission.

I have seen that video before - it always made me wonder how quickly the paperwork could be completed for a pair of AMRAAMs to be pulled from the stores and latched onto an F-16 instead of sending them up "naked".

as this SLF- non fighter pilot understands it from other related aticles- paperwork was not the issue. The warheads and similar needed to be mounted and assembled in a different storage area, etc. Keep in mind that up to that date- intercepts for real baddies were focused outward, not inward. Intercepts for internal airtraffic- eg hijackers were mainly to track- identify and/or fly in front of airplane and' direct' them to a different path. I'm sure some fighter jock can give more details.

armorment at best/worst for such might be tracers across the nose-

That being said - other reports did mention that AFTER 911 for a while- fighters for a peeiod of time were considered to be ' weapons free " over the U.S capital, etc. and were sutiably armed.

Keep in mind that ALL air traffice was grounded within an hour or so in U.S ...
