I'm new here so don't bring the sky down on me if this is the wrong spot for it....

Ok so firstly I am 17 and my life is in aviation and I want to get my engineering liscence... I don't know what to do... legit I'm confuzzeled af

I know I need about 4 years experience and pass about 14 exams, and record work i an experience book.. I think

Someone able to list the whole prosess?

And where do I get one of these experience log book thigmos

BTW I'm in Australia

At your age you need an AME apprenticeship. You have a number of apprenticeship options:

MEA40715 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer - Mechanical
MEA40615 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer - Avionics
MEA41315 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer - Structures

Contact your local Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) to find out which of those apprenticeships has a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) available in Darwin. It appears there is only one AASN in Darwin - Australian Apprenticeships NT, 38 Woods Street, Darwin, which is also a Group Training Organisation (GTO) who may be able to offer you an AME apprenticeship through one of their employers.

If they can't help you with an apprenticeship, you must help yourself by contacting every aircraft maintenance organisation and airline in Darwin/NT seeking an apprenticeship. The military is another apprenticeship option, although not in my opinion a first choice as most military aircraft engineering is now carried out by civilian contractors.

During your apprenticeship you will compile a Schedule of Experience (SOE I think it is still called?) which lists your various work experience competencies, signed off by your supervising LAME.

On successful completion of your four year apprenticeship, you sit the basic AME CASA licensing exams, provide your SOE to verify your work experience, and your whole new life of frustration in the aviation industry begins.

A word of warning: If you are not prepared to live on a low apprentice wage, want a flash car instead of a used bicycle, want a hectic social life, are not prepared to study, can't get out of bed in the morning, don't want to sweep the hangar floor or are a gentle petal that can't take a few straight words from your superiors, go seek a career with McDonald's, KFC or Hungry Jacks.

After decades in aviation and apprenticeships, I have little time for the 60% of Australian apprentices (60% and higher has been the apprentice failure rate for some years) who start their apprenticeship and never complete. It is they who are most vocal against the overseas 457 qualified workers who "come here and take our jobs", great career opportunities that a majority of Aussie kids no longer are prepared to work hard for.

I can get an apprentiship in Darwin easy, i have a few contacts

So i need to fina a SOE book? :eek:World of frustration? Oh goodness... hahahah nothing new to me

I have good transportation means so im good, not overly social, sweeping the floor isnt new to me, and i cant take alot of verbal abuse so i think im alright :'D :ok:

Shame about all the Aussie kids....:sad:

You don't need to find an SOE Book - you need to find an apprenticeship. And I doubt that is as easy and simple as you suggest.

I have done abit of apprentichip.. well more than a bit, quite alot actually but not years worth and hardly any recorded

And my dad owns a aircharter company and maintenance company so apprentiship is the least of my concern :rolleyes:

So the SOE and CASA Basics are nearly finished, it was extended by CASA but I'm unsure how long . It's a great way of getting a licence as you can self study. SOE's are available for download on the CASA website for free in a PDF form.

The new way is through a Part 147 Registered Training organisation like Aviation Australia. As a Darwin apprentice you would be sent to Cairns on block release. The RTO supplies you with a logbook related to your work.

RTO log books are based on Competence and normal have 3 tasks to complete for each section. SOE are time based and people like to see diversity of experience, these are assessed by CASA direct .


My bits of advice are
* If you can then do it as CASA exams , the travel and accommodation is a killer unless someone else is paying. These can be credited towards a course with AA.

* Smash out the theory . It's what people struggle with. Fill out your SOE/JOE religiously and make back ups . I used to do every Friday on work time.

* Don't limit yourself to Mech . I'm B1 /B2 which makes me very employable. We seem 15 years behind Europe where the trend is to Dual trade guys.


* Don't do it , go work in IT or something . Risk vs Reward isn't great and the licencing process in Australia is F**ked royally. Newly licenced guys come out with no types on their licence. I have 12 pages of grandfathered types on my licence.... many I haven't even seen. It's not a level playing field for newbies

Not sure, just knew it was the case. Don't know about the school in Cairns but would be a far better place to go than Adelaide from Darwin weather and drinking water considered.

Ummmm, If you're Dad owns a Maintenance Company as you mentioned above, then why are you asking the questions here - instead of directing them at the Chief Engineer or maintenance personnel at your Dad's company????

Also, I would learn to spell a bit better when in aviation. Paperwork and LBE's (Log Book Entries) will be a part of your daily activities. Especially if you become a LAME like myself.
Just respect the people that give you advice & direction, listen to instructions, don't be a hero - and you'll go a long way!

From what im hearing the old exam system may be comimg back as the new system is a complete failure. Funny nearly 20 years ago i said this would happen.

Honesly find some thing else to do. The pain is not worth the end product.

Personally, I think I was having a dig at the young kids finishing school nowadays - with no disrespect to the thread starter - that the general consensus is that the spelling of these generation kids is lacking. Maybe texting and abbreviating is what has made them like they are - or just don't care what they present to others... Just my experience with the new entry level mechanics.

As an casa exam is there another way?
I have heard I can do them up here but haven't looked into that
And what's the AA

Ok was going to do airframe aswell, but not the avionics... heck electrics do my head in


Yea I've heard that it isn't the best anymore, people got all the tickets but no liscence

Evan dad has a liscence for something he never touched, when they changed the rules he got it

I have been around aviation for all my life, flying swinging off spanners all that so I wouldn't call myself a newbie

Well there are not that many maintenance places in Darwin (area) and not all have a charter company too.

Some don't have many or any kids.

So that really only leaves one place I can think of, and that has a large variety of aircraft - both flying and not.

(Can not remember the family make up, but if correct I have meet you all).
