I had a brief conversation with a PAX River Aeronautical Engineer about the F-35 Tail Hook problem a while back and he suggested sometimes things are a bit more complicated than first thought.

He sent me this short video as an example.

This is the best missile animation, by far...

The sidewinder video is not complete as its missing the description of the working of the Proximty fuze and what happens when it detects the target. The order "Abandon Missile" is then given:E

I thought the pitcher and catcher were the proximity fuse?

SAS, it's systems engineering. A number of different feedback loops make various decisions based on received signals.
Change course to get to target(and figure out lead, updating frequently)
Time the explosion "just right"

The rocket science is getting it to fly, and its performance specs: how fast, how high, how agile, how far.

HTK is a hard standard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU9C2iLm764) to meet at those speeds.

For some reason my browser was only playing half of it.
