Class upgrade on staff travel with US airline

can anyone tell me whether there is any hope to get a class upgrade on transatlantic flights Europe - US with DL or UA on an interline staff ticket ?
And if so, any suggestion on how to best proceed ? :O

When you check in tick the upgrade seat box.

When you goto the gate agent to get your seat assignment after all the paying passengers have their seat assigned KINDLY ask if there's any seats left in first class/business.

Be patient and don't get pissy if they don't give it to you.
