Advice please. Four people arriving late evening (close to midnight) and need to get to the City Centre. Is public transport still running or it it best to take a taxi?

Cost of public transport for 4 people will be close to the taxi fare. And yes, public transport still running. Google it.

This site (http://www.bvg.de/en) tells you everything you need to know about the excellent public transport network in Berlin.

You can buy tickets ahead of time via the app. This is useful since the station at Schoenefeld is always crowded with people trying to operate the machines - and failing

I can confirm previous comments.

Overall for 4 I would consider a taxi. Tad more expensive but unless your destination is very near a U Bahn station and your are lucky with the time table it would be much more convenient for little added costs IMHO.

Only one problem I can think of, does the taxi have a gas (LPG) bottle in the boot? Got caught out in Madrid, three of us, crew, with bags! Could be a tight squeeze.

Seconded book S Bahn in advance, its a doddle, quick and easy.
Berlin is a revelation in how public transport ought to operate.

And for the very best German traditional country cooking and atmosphere at normal country prices find Zum Patzenhofer just off the Ku-Damm near the Zoo. Fabulous dark, cosy little family run restaurant, but make sure you go there hungry!
