Aircraft power for Garmin 795 GPS on Eurocopter EC120 ?

Has anyone got any solutions for supplying aircraft power to a Garmin 795 portable GPS on a UK registered Eurocopter EC120.

I'm preferably trying to get it hard wired so that I can mount the device near the main console. I have the Garmin bare wires mount which requires two wires to be connected but it's proving to be very difficult !!!! :=:ugh::=:ugh:

I'm hopefully having USB ports fitted, but the Garmin 795 doesn't work with USB power so that's not a solution.

Has anyone managed to achieve this on something similar ?

Unless you get a CAA Mod agreed, I am not sure that you can "hard wire" into the aircraft electronics. For that very reason my Flymap L power lead runs to a plug, and I have the cigarette-style power take-off installed on the aircraft.


I recall that little piece of Eurocopter (now Airbus) plastic and wire to be prohibitively expensive.

Unfortunately I don't have one of those sockets installed in the aircraft anyway. I genuinely can't see the real problem in simply tapping off power from an existing item of avionics or something else close by.

Is it really such a problem ? I reckon it's a 5 minute job, but obviously it's not 'approved'. I won't be doing that, but what's the real issue ???

Hmm no need to fiddle with aircraft wiring. Sounds like a bad idea.
Behind the collective there should be 24V available,
with a few 'banana' -plugs bought at a local electronics store,
you're good to go:ok:

You could also think about a solar charger.

JT - sorry to be the bearer of "bad news" but, as I understand it, any fiddling with the wiring is not approved and needs a CAA-approved MOD. Permanent wiring makes the unit part of the machine. The alternative, of fitting either a power take-off or a USB is an approved MOD and hence you can do that. The unit - not being wired in - is therefore a carry on/off and does not itself have to be approved.


I had exactly this problem with the Flymap L unit:


1. Can't permanently wire it in - I have the cigarette-style power take-off
2. Can't fit the sensor for the artificial HUD / 3-D environment under the MRG centre; it works where we could have it, just not as well.
3. Cannot break into the vacuum lines to connect the altimeter on the Flymap L - so that piece of the HUD does not work.




No matter that each of the actions was "little" and well within the competency of the maintenance team, no approved MOD = No Chance.

I think it is the Eurocopter power outlet that he is missing, into which this might plug.

When you get the USB sockets installed, just add an aux socket next to them, use the new wiring that is supplying the usb which should be circuit breaker protected, no CAA approved mod required, CS-STAN is your friend through a 145 company.

I'm also assuming you are using the Tru Blue USB ports which are a self contained unit with 12-32V input?
