Australia is preparing to send spy planes to the Philippines to help the country’s military counter an offensive by Islamic militants.
Marise Payne, Australia’s defence minister, confirmed today that two air force P-3 Orion long-range surveillance and reconnaissance planes will operate over the southern Philippines region of Mindanao, where the conflict with Islamic insurgents has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands. It is likely that the Australian aircraft would operate from Malaysia’s Butterworth air force base.
