If you go via Dili, you are faced with a hellish 10 hour bus trip to Kupang. There is no visa on arrival at the land border. So you have to queue up in the sun for hours with hundreds of people to get in the Indo embassy to apply for a visa. The process takes 5 days, then you have go through the whole ordeal again to collect your passport. Never again! And 5 days waiting in Dili is not much fun. And you have to fly Air North with their crazy prices...

Can you still get an Indonesian visa in Australia before you leave? I got one last year without any problems.

That's a very good idea but you still have to go to Dili. Yuk! I've been there maybe 10 times so I know the place well....
