Just been given a bottle of vin de table white. Bottled by Griersons, drink it?

I could put it in my permenant collection I suppose. Never invited into the sergeants' mess so no idea what it's like.

You have a bottle of wine and you are having to ask whether or not you should drink it

I suspect that you were given two bottles, and......having drunk one you are now seeking advice!

If the NCO Aircrew of my acquaintance were anything to go by as arbiters of taste, I think you'll find that WOs & Sergeants Mess members won't tolerate overpriced or unpleasant rubbish, so I'm sure that the wine will be fine,

But drink it now rather than laying it down, I would suggest!

As a member of the 'Woes & Joes' mess for a number of years I can never remember having seen wine being drunk. It was 'beer for real men' and 'wine for officers and poofs'. Note the differentiation there.

Me too. Although not commissioned we weren't entirely ribald and unsophisticated in the WOs and Sgts Mess.

No ladies, only wives.

Unfortunately, many of the RAF stations of which I spoke were, in those days, the subject of 'Unaccompanied Tours', unlike the apparent Butlin's Holiday Camp which they became latterly.

I was at Abingdon in 1959 when the Sgt's Mess at Abingdon let Brigitte Bardot have a drink in their mess after the Abingdon Officer's Mess refused her entry - not sure why - improperly dressed perhaps?

BB was making the film "Babette Goes to War" part of which was shot at Abingdon.

I'll have to look again but I'm pretty sure it is from RAF Hereford. It has a Hereford in the decal.
