Sgt Merry was killed off La Rochelle on 13 October 1942 when captain of a Whitley Mk V BD290 of No 10 OTU and on an anti submarine patrol. The rest of the crew survived and were made prisoners. Personally I was surprised to learn that a crew still under training was making an operational anti-submarine patrol.

Today there was a ceremony at St Eloi cemetery in La Rochelle at Sgt Merry's grave, to commemorate his sacrifice and that of many others For some reason this was the first such ceremony we know of in memory of Sgt Merry, but the intention of the Maire and the local ex-service associations that this should become an annual event, which RAFA Sud Ouest France intend to support.

Sgt Merry was the son of James and Mary Merry of Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Just a thought, wondered if anyone knows if any of Sgt Merry's relatives are around and might want to attend in future years. In the meantime if you are raising a glass tonight, perhaps you would include this young man in your thoughts.
