I'm not sure that this is the right forum, but I can't think of anywhere better.
I understand that slots are awarded for winter/summer traffic seasons. What happens with a route that only operates for part of the traffic season, for example Air Canada operate a second daily service from London to Heathrow (16 weeks last summer, just over half the traffic season). How are these slots administered - are the awarded or sub-leased to another airline at other times?
Presumably an airline that has "random cancellations" (US carriers in the winter, for example) simply doesn't use the slots - I don't know where we are with lose it or use it.
Incidently, is there any reason why BA cancelled certain short haul flights for 2 - 4 weeks at a time during the last winter season? Is this because they don't have the resources to operate all the services they have slots for but need to operate some of the time to keep them?
