So who set off the fire suppression in the Qantas hangar at Brisbane last week?

Must've been quite a sight, considering the reports are the foam made it as far as the local waterways in sufficient quantities to start killing the local wildlife and the authorities have issued a warning against eating any fish caught in the lower Brisbane River to as far north as Shorncliffe! It's over 500m from their hangar to the creekline.

Warning after Brisbane foam spill APRIL 14, 201711:14AM

Chemicals used in firefighting foam that spewed out of a Brisbane Airport hanger and escaped into the stormwater system have caused fears "worldwide", the state government warns.

Queensland Environment Minister Steven Miles said the spill was "very substantial" and the state government was in the process of phasing out the chemicals used in the foam after they were recently banned in Queensland.
But the airport site is controlled and regulated by the Commonwealth, which hasn't banned them.

Nevertheless, Dr Miles said the incident should "send a message" to industries throughout Queensland, irrespective of their governing body, that they should dispose of the firefighting foam if they have it.
"This is a chemical that has caused concern worldwide," Dr Miles said on Friday.

The Queensland government confirmed on Friday about 22,000 litres of the foam was released from a failed deluge system within the Qantas hanger on April 10. While about three-quarters was contained, some of the remaining portion appears to have seeped into the wider environment and caused the deaths of 20 nearby fish.

Health authorities are now warning people to avoid eating seafood or fishing near the potentially contaminated area around the lower reaches of the Brisbane River, from Bulimba Creek to Fisherman Island, and north to Shorncliffe.

It's believed the foam contained perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) but chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said there was "no consistent evidence" that exposure posed a threat to humans.

"(But) I understand this was a significant spill (and) avoiding seafood consumption from the impacted area in the short term is a sensible, cautious approach," Dr Young said. Dr Miles echoed the sentiment, and said the government's warning was being issued as a precaution, with tests results due back next week to determine conclusively if the dead fish were killed by the foam spill.

A joint investigation between the Queensland and Commonwealth governments is now underway and environmental officers have taken water samples from the polluted site.

No, no, not just them. That's only the one I quoted. If it'll make you feel better, you can check out the EPA's media release confirming it yourself (https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/pollution/management/incidents/brisbane-airport.html)...

Thank you for the link, now thats a good bit of information. No key words like"spewed", "worldwide" or 22,000litres from the "hanger" to be seen. You can continue bashing the wall with your face.

For a non-story, the EPA are being remarkably persistent - and quoting the 22,000l too. That's an awful lot of allegedly nasty goop to brush under the rug eh, unob?

20 nearby fish

So if this unfortunate school had been loitering a little further away (beyond nearby, maybe even as far away as close by), where fish did not die, would this have been the enormous environmental disaster it seems to be?
My Dad and I killed more than that over easter :ok:

Whereas previously the fish in the water that flowed past the oil refineries, the coal elevators, grain elevators, cement works, Luggage Point Sewerage outflow, the run off from the container port, the discharge from the cargo ships etc were perfectly safe to eat.

Folks,
Not mentioned so far is the potential for damage to whatever aircraft were in the hangar at the time.
With the Jetstar incident at Williamtown, there was very serious (in $$$ terms) to an A-320 part on the hangar.
Does anybody know whether the foam used by QF actually still contained PFOA?
Tootle pip!!

Didn't happen in the hangar. No bubble bath. The fire suppression system failed and leaked into the nearby canal.

IAW,
Thanks for that, a fact that is not obvious from all the "reports".
That would also explain the lack of major visuals --- nothing to see with "bubbles".

Those fish in the drain floating belly up looked like carp anyway, it looks like a major fail by all parties involved with the spillage, Q were slow reporting it, QLD state gov were slow reporting it,, and the feds who own the land were missing in action.

Yeah, I'm with all you guys who think this is just another envornmental beat-up. Who cares about a few dead fish? And the bits of the Great Barrier Reef that haven't been killed off by climate change, cyclone Debbie, and fertiliser runoff are a long way away and aren't worth looking at anyway, so a few extra chemicals won't make any difference. I actually like swimming in water that's got lots of chemicals in it - less chance of being taken by a shark - the ones that have escaped the nets. So go for it - who cares about the environment.

Right near Luggage Point and you know what they process there.
