Can anyone shed any light as to why VA9533 did a turnback about 30 minutes or so into their YSSY-YBHM flight today?
The TAF and METAR don't look too bad up there, so I can't imagine it's WX related.
Any info greatly appreciated.

Qantas, Qantas Link, Virgin and Jetstar in and out today. No need for the actual weather to continue to destination.
More than likely something has gone U/S that would prevent them leaving Hamilton Is.

I heard the call from BNE centre to the Virgin aircraft, was something along the lines of "company advises that your bay will be/is not available, immediately return to Sydney"
1740 local time
2 JQ 320's on the ground now and an Alliance F100.
1 VA 737 just departed to BNE.
They are getting them away as quickly as they can considering manual check in.
Good job VA JQ QF QFLINK ALLIANCE.:ok:

There was also a Jetstar flight headed into HTI that appeared to be diverted to Townsville and later flew back to HTI. I assumed there might have been a lack of parking given the traffic at Hamilton yesterday afternoon.

Limited bays and limited/no fuel available on HTI.
They would have tankered fuel in anyway I'd expect and not need to refuel. They were flying in mostly empty of any loads.

As I recall, no bay means runway is blocked, nowhere else to park

I was wondering what the issue was? Third world facilities. And I thought a cyclone had caused it!
