Don't forget Clyde Cessna was a farmer. The Mid-America Air Museum (http://www.kansastravel.org/airmuseum.htm) in Liberal, Kansas, has a surprising number of well constructed farmer built aircraft. IIRC the majority in the photo below the Comanche in the link are such.
