Intersection departure

Hello,

I was wondering whether or not it is required to recieve a specific clearance in order to perform an intersection departure. For example, if ATC tells me "ABC123 taxi holding point runway 01" can I choose whichever intersection I want without notifying ATC prior to reaching it, or do i need to taxi all the way down the runway unless i ask for an intersection?

You need to request and receive a clearance for an intersection departure.
Different wake turbulence separation requirements being one reason.

Is that the case both in Europe and the US? (Since I'm mainly curious about ICAO and Europe phraseology)
Because to me it seems like, if they want you to use full length, ATC should specifiy it (?) and by saying "taxi holding point (and not specifying which holding point) rwy 01" seems more free and it seems like it's up to the pilot whether or not to perform an intersection dept.

But, I'm might well indeed be wrong.

From CAP 413, the UK R/T guide:

"Taxi instructions issued by a controller will always contain a clearance ​limit, which is the point at which the aircraft must stop, unless further ​permission to proceed is given. For departing aircraft, the clearance limit ​will normally be the holding point of the runway in use, but it may be ​any other position on the aerodrome depending on the prevailing traffic."

The default is the holding point for full length but if in doubt we would ask. Generally it is either down to the crew to request an intersection or ATC might ask if an intersection is suitable for traffic reasons. At many busy airports you won't get a straightforward taxi clearance all the way to the runway holding point anyway, it will be a progressive clearance via intermediate points.

Prepare for both full length and your desired intersection. When you ask for taxi, request your desired intersection. If granted, they will specify it in your clearance. Otherwise it's full length (or taxi clearance limit).

When using intersections for departure make sure you know the reduced TORA and that your aircraft can accept it. There have been many events where an aircraft take-off configuration has been incorrect when using intersections.
