Hi - what do the doctors test for in the urinie test ?
Also, I heard that some also ask for a hair sample ? ( taken from the armpits ! )

FAA Medical (Urine)-- Never heard of anyone taking a hair sample. Also, urine test for drug testing is not the same as the sample taken for the FAA medical.

Federal Air Surgeon, based on the case history and appropriate, qualified medical
judgment relating to the condition involved, finds:

medical certificate applied for or held, to make the person unable to perform
those duties or exercise those privileges.
II. Examination Techniques
Any standard laboratory procedures are acceptable for these tests.
III. Aerospace Medical Disposition
Glycosuria or proteinuria is cause for deferral of medical certificate issuance until additional
studies determine the status of the endocrine and/or urinary systems. If the glycosuria has
been determined not to be due to carbohydrate intolerance, the Examiner may issue the
certificate. Trace or 1+ proteinuria in the absence of a history of renal disease is not cause
for denial.
The Examiner may request additional urinary tests when they are indicated by history or
examination. These should be reported on FAA Form 8500-8 or attached to the form as an
addendum.

If you start testing for too many things, then you will inevitably find an anomaly.

Armpit hair sounds drug related.

There was and still may be, an element within the CAA medical section, that advocated head hair testing for drug and alcohol use and abuse, especially for cabin crew. It's fairly common knowledge, for example, that blood gamma levels often return to normal after six weeks alcohol abstinence even in the heaviest of drinkers. Thereafter, one can donate a blood specimen and return to heavy drinking and repeat this cycle until death or an accident occurs. This would not be the case with a hair sample although that test itself is open to its own controversy.
By some imp of the perverse but very British in its thought logic and in that country, a hair test that proves positive might be used as prove of alcohol abuse while one that was negative may not be used as evidence of innocence in excessive imbibing.

Amazing

The entire document, not just this section, seems to have a disconnect with real life, let alone medical science.

eg you get put through the mill if there is a family history of abuse. So if your wife was an alcoholic but you are teetotal look out......repeated ECGs under 40 etc etc. Trace cocaine and that's your lot.
