CAE ADAPT Tests
Does anyone have any info on these tests?
Can you practice online first, if so does anyone have a link?
Not getting much joy at the moment with my online searches 😟
Thanks.

Smokie,

I took the ADAPT test in October and I can honestly say that it's nothing to worry about. All I can suggest is practising distance, speed and time calculations over and over as these are the only things you can actually prepare for. The rest (spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination etc.) is meant to test your natural abilities, so its very hard to prepare for because it's so general.

Good luck for whenever you take it!

I used latest pilot jobs oxford package and it was great for speed testing and the questions were the same type - they also have a pretty goof recreation of the ball test and the slalom as part of that package. Combined that with a bit of BBC bitesize revision of physics (electrical theory mainly) and it was all good.

I also used Latest Pilot Jobs! was a good resource for the ADAPT Test. It wasnt as bad as I thought if im honest, the physics and maths part, you could brush up a little, just learn the basic GCSE stuff like basic circuits, just give it a read over. Have a look at a ADAPT test being done, on youtube btw, itll give you an idea of what part of the multi tasking ADAPT test is like as its the same software

I didn't actually pass the first time, I failed in March due to the Fixed wing which is sort of like a flight simulator, where you have to maintain an altitude and fly to certain points. The explanation of this is clear enough when doing it, I just reckon I lost concentration at this part. Even though i failed this, CAE gave me the option to move onto part 3 and retake the Fixed Wing part at the same time after 3 months.

Overall, check Latest Pilot Jobs and dont be too nervous. I definitely over thought it but I passed and I start at Oxford January 2nd!

Good luck!

I will be going through the ADAPT test at Oxford next month, last time I failed the Ball games aspect (moving the ball on the target using the joystick). Does anyone have any tips for that part of the test?

Many thanks!

Ive just had a look at the adapt multi tasking part that looks like its relentlessly throwing orders at you ,does it all happen very fast ? And in regards to the ball game, does the ball move just horizontaly and verticaly?

I don't know about my score, I never got told what score I got. All I know is I failed it. Shame because it was the very last part of the whole assessment as well. If anyone has any tips for it for my resit then that would be very much appreciated.

Maths and Physics Bundle (http://www.caeoxfordinteractive.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=198)

This is the bundle it covers alot of subjects in both maths and physics which will help you alot in the stage 2 assessment and its what i used while revising for my stage 2.
Latestpilotjobs adapt test package will also aid you with the other aspects of stage 2 like the red ball test
and the Fast test
here is an example of it

Hi all,

I'm currently using CAE's online Maths & Physics bundle package to prepare and there's lessons at the end on the origins of the universe and life of a star etc. Do I need to really spend time on these topics? They seem a bit random compared to the other topics (mass, forces, circuits etc.)

i.e. will they actually ask questions on this, or would I be foolish not to revise it because it's literally in the pack they provide?

Hiya, I'm currently preparing for CAE's Stage 2 selection. For the people who bought the ADAPT package from LatestPilotJobs, which package did you go for? I'm unsure whether I need the advanced flight simulator and working memory test prep for Stage 2 or not. Many thanks

Hello. I have been to CAE oxofrd And i have done th stage 2 Assessments. Unfortunately i didnt pass the physics module and it means i need to re do it if I'm planning to go for easyjet course. However if i want to join the intgrated course then i could repeat the physics module after doing stage 3. Thats not the answer for your question but i think you will need the 1 month package from latestpilotjobs that bas the simulator and the short memory. You need to focus on physics and math more importantly. Because they arent expecting you to be a pro in the simulator they want you to be able to focus and follow the orders. You will enjoy using the joy stick like i did for the first time in my life. Hope that helps and good luck.

Some are saying you are not allowed a calculator.. some are saying you are.. Maybe for the normal maths and physics tests you are not allowed a calculator but for the progressive ones you are? Does anyone actually know?

Rachel_
14th Apr 2019, 14:34
Do you reckon it’s worth calling them? Just to find out if it’s calculator or not?

Also so does anyone know if mental maths would be required or tested? I cannot see it on the pdf but that is my worst point I have to admit! X

aviation.al
14th Apr 2019, 15:15
I think it is worth clarifying. I'm going to call them on Monday. In the ADAPT pack they sent me, if you look carefully, it says that NO calculator is allowed on the maths and physics. But then they give you examples of the questions asked, and quite frankly without a calculator, it's unrealistic to do it in your head even if you are very good at mental calculations. For example, how could one be expected to calculate tan(34) without a calculator? :) Correct me if I'm wrong, but either you need to know a handful of trigonometric identities and spend several minutes converting all the numbers and dividing and multiplying on a piece of paper, OR you are actually allowed to use a basic calculator. From what I understand, the maths and physics questions aren't multiple choice, so you cannot simply guess and estimate. If you get the answer wrong, you get it wrong. You don't get marked on 'showing your working' like we are used to in GCSE or A Level.

Why not use some initiative and it might give you the edge on the competition. I would expect mental arithmetic with a focus on speed and accuracy - useful for flying as well.

aviation.al

You said "why don't you use some initiative". The problem is not with using our initiative, Reverserbucket. Of course we're going to use our initiative and practice some mental maths  The problem is that there don't appear to be any clear instructions about whether we can or cannot use a calc for this test. In addition, there are numerous posts with conflicting information, which arouses further confusion. It would be nice to know for sure, that's all.

Hello guys, I’ve just gone through the stage 2 assessment and now I can clear a few things! And tell you what I thought...

Maths and Physics!

No calculator! Sorry! However the sums you have to do are manageable until you get to the last questions you may have to estimate your answer
distance = speed x time! Practice getting fast on these questions no need to actually remember the formula but nice if you can be quick on them!
In the physics I think it would be beneficial just to practice the formulas. Getting quick to adapting the question to the formula would ease you

Cognitive tests

So I thought these were okay, but practice these online! I’ve found pretty good YouTube videos to explain the non verbal reasoning tests so which ever you struggle with just put some time into it

FAST

Yeah this is difficult! Practice makes perfect, I used latest pilot jobs program and I did find this useful! Just to put the many tasks you have to do at once
You get 2 attempts at this, the first one is to see your initial reactions and the 2nd is to see what you have learnt!

Fixed wing

So I did find this more challenging than I thought! The program on latest pilot jobs was good however I relied too much on the screen at the bottom to tell me if I was on track or not. So maybe try and cover that and only listen to air traffic and at the end see how close you were?
You do get a practice go for this, so don’t worry! The ‘instructor’ will teach you the controls before the test!

Red ball test

This is fine! Practice on latest pilot jobs does help, just do a little each day!

Overall

Don’t stress!
It’s not that difficult however it’s a lot to process and to take in which makes it harder!
Take as many breaks as you need between tests
Talk to others! Everyone is in the same boat and might be applying to a different scheme/company so it might be interesting as what they have to say
The cae bundle does help but do not stress yourself about the questions that require a calculator
Enjoy it! Take your time, and learn from it!

As there is discussion of ADAPT tests here we thought it would be useful to clarify a few points.

The ADAPT tests are widely used for selection at airlines and ahead of flight training programs. The ADAPT test battery varies per airline or training school, however, if you want to familiarise yourself with the ADAPT tests including FAST, Ball Game, Maths, Physics and cognitive reasoning, you can access them on our ecommerce site to help you know what to expect before your assessment day. Each test contains randomly generated questions and will be unique, allowing you to practice and revise as much as you feel would be helpful on each individual subject. If you are unsure what tests you will be taking on the day of your assessment I recommend that you contact the training school, company or airline and ask them so that you know which ones to practice. Please note we are aware of other websites claiming to offer preparation for the ADAPT tests – these are in no way affiliated with Symbiotics and the tests available from these sites are not our ADAPT tests that you will be taking on your assessment day. We do not have resellers, distributors or partners. All the best on your assessment day and future career in aviation and if you have any questions about the ADAPT tests we’ll be happy to help, please message us on here and we will be happy to respond to your queries.

For the ball test, Like on the the latestpilotjobs software, does the ball move up when you pull the stick down and down when you pull it up?

for example move stick left = move ball left
move stick right = move ball right
but move stick up = move ball down
and move stick down = ball moves up

you can change the setting on latest pilot jobs so move the stick down = down etc
Which is the setting in the actual CAE adapt test

The Symbiotics stuff is as close as you can get to the real thing so will set you up nicely for the day although expensive and you only get one go. My opinion is that SkyTest is better as you can go through it multiple times. If you have the money, have a go at the Symbiotics stuff and then choose the right tests from the SkyTest selection.

You don't get the red dot test in the SkyTest package which is one of the tests you face and so would be good to practice that, although the ADAPT version is slightly different. I have done the Symbiotics ADAPT tests, but haven't done the CAE set so can't comment on if the LPJ package includes everything.

Hello,
I just recently applied to CAE through a university and I'm booked to do the skills assessment test at the end of this month. I am not aware of much practice material, I am aware it is a test we cant prepare much on but I did notice online a lot of you discussing practices, and during that, a lot of things confused me. I wanted to know what the stages are since I am only aware of doing this test and medical as my pre-requisites. Can I also know some good practice materials, i am considering buying the latest jobs package as well as CAE maths and physics bundle. it would be great to get more information or tips and if there are any more practice materials that would be great too!

I have an exam in 2 weeks so have been studying my maths and physics for the last few weeks.

For those that have completed the stage 2 examination, or just have the information for this questions, to what extent is aviation knowledge tested? Is there a complete section on it and if so are there any specific topics you would recommend learning?

Thanks in advance

Aviation knowledge is not even tested at this stage, the most you can be asked regarding it is an easy acronym in the cognitive exercises. Maths and physics are easy, start with the difficult ones though. If you want a full review I made about stage 2 go to the thread the says "CAE skills assessment".

in January I might go troghut the ADAPT test in Oxford. anyway i've read and seen a lot of thing about the ADAPT test and I think that I understood the majority of the test, but still now I'm very confuse about the cognitive part (reasoning test). so if anyone that already did the adapt at CAE could explain me what I have to expect in that part. thank you people

Hello everyone !

Anybody taking the CAE Assessment in January ? Would be good to chat ! I'm taking mine on the 22nd

And has anyone taken it recently ? Any feedback ? I've read that the hand/eye coordination has controls inverted for the roll and it's controlled by twisting the joystick...

As I'm practicing on latest pilot jobs, I'd like to know if the overall test is very similar, easier or harder than the actual ADAPT test....

Many thanks !

latestpilotjobs helps but is not really the full picture, practice loads of speed distance time and speed distance time with fuel burn, be good with pythagoras, trigonometry, bearings, ratios, percentages ....physics be good at resistances/basic circuits, resistance formulas , V=IR etc etc, bernoulli's theorem, gas laws, the red dot is reversed on the x axis and is done by twisting the joystick. There are other tests like mathematical reasoning, visual reasoning Its not an easy test imho depending on how familiar you are with these subjects already will dictate the outcome, the adapt stuff you cant necessarily improve a great deal you either have it or dont for the most part. Check out sky test for the maths and physics

Hi everyone,
I have my stage 2 coming up in a couple days and was just wondering for the maths and physics test are you given a calculator and a formula sheet or do you have to memorise them. Also, is the maths and physics test multiple choice questions or not. Thanks

sms8
10th Feb 2020, 04:44
calculators are not allowed, there is a formula sheet but you should know some of the more basic ones like hooks law. I don't think that was there on the sheet all multiple choice... maths consists mostly of speed distance time and speed distance time with fuel burn problems with ever increasing difficulty I recommend starting at the harder questions first as they are worth the most marks and fairly essential to get a pass. Good luck

Hi everyone,
I've passed my stage 2 assessments few months ago.
For the maths part : calculator aren't allowed, 20 questions in 30 minutes. The questions include speed-distance-time problems, speed-distance-time with fuel calculation ( fuel used = rate x time ), Pythagoras's theorem, heading (360° a full circle).
Be careful with the units (km/h, miles per hour, miles per minute, ...) and 1,5 hours = 1 hour and 30 min, don't forget to convert the time during calculations.
Check your answers if it makes sense with the question, and check the unit, for example : 45 lbs/min and not 45 min/lbs.
Some informations are given during the assessment, as speed-distance-time formula; 5 miles = 8 km; and 2,2 lbs = 1 kg.
For the physics part : calculator aren't allowed, 20 questions in 30 minutes. The questions include balancing weights, current and resistors, energy, and other topics but I don't really remember.
A paper with formulas are given : Current (amps) = Voltage (volts) / Resistance (ohms); weight = mass x gravity (gravity = 9,81 m/s^2); and other formulas.

I hope it helps you, Good luck ;)

PS : Stay calm during the assessments. And if you failed at a test, don't give up, you can do it again!!

As a current CAE student I could not give a stronger recommendation to avoid this place. Current students are being farmed out to Eastern European (non-CAE bases) where an ATPL costs significantly less. There are people in Oxford just now who have spent over 2 years on the course and still do not have a CPL.

At best, CAE have been disingeneous with their responses. If you know any current students then please ask them about their experiences of flight training.

never done online I’m surprised they are I’m wondering what they are doing to prevent cheating, in any case it’s mostly GCSE based physics and the maths primarily speed distance time, pythagoras , fuel burn calculations. bearing/orientation questions Essentially you need your multiplication and division skills to be sharp read the questions carefully plenty of trick questions e.g 1.25 hrs is 1hr15 mins be fluid with swapping between mins and hours. Generally I find you may be better off starting from the hardest (question 20) and work back as they are weighted with the final 5 bringing the most marks. If you really dont know dont waste time move on and come back the clocks tick fast. The rest like ball test is hand eye coordination there are places like latestpilotjobs.com where you can practice and yes the left and right are reversed and controlled by twisting the joystick... the fasst test again is practicable but you need to have the ability cant really be trained as such... keep calm and focus. Let us know how you get on... I possibly would have suggested a bit of prep time would be sensible if you fail its 3 months so you will have the experience and will know where to practice. Best of luck

p.s the other tests are listening memory and cognitive reasoning tests some things you kind of have or you don’t... but pay attention to detail!

You can’t blame ATOs for attempting to drum up business; it is survival time after all, and marketing departments do need to think of creative if not imaginative ways to entice the punter through the door.

For a start, make no charge for the selection process. Do you really need one anyway?

A cosy chat will a seasoned aviator will assess “the cut of their jib”.
And have lunch with the prospective student / group ~ a relaxed form of group interview.

Minimum 5 GCSEs / five NAT 5s (Scottish) including maths and english,
2 ‘A’ levels / 3 Scottish Highers (lower 6th exams)
[“A” equate to Advanced Highers]

It will become obvious within the first month of groundschool who are the “training risks” or real ‘no hopers’ : [sorry ~ never say never]
This is in effect a 4 week interview.

As one old hairy ex Nav groundschool instructor said to me when I was a new QFI at BAe flying college, PIK
“if they are thick at the groundschool, they will be thick at the flying”.
So true.

Normal hand to eye coordination sufficient to enjoy driving a car is fine.
It is not fast jet flying after all requiring a “large brain” as well.

To quote an old phrase “the exception which proves the rule”

The human brain is amazing at ‘going up a few gears’

I don’t doubt for one minute that you will have customers who eventually see the light, and do well.
I can think of one “cross over” who went helicopters to fast jet, and did a tour with the Red Arrows.
To paraphrase his words “the mists cleared”.

Just out of interest, when did you leave school,
and what grades in Maths & Physics did you achieve in GCSE / A levels or their equivalents (in Mexico ~ if that really is your location??)
