At the beginning of last month, the Australian Transportation Safety Board prepared an "MH370 First Principles Review":

The conclusion of the review was that there remains a 25,000 square Km area that needs to be searched. This area is basically an area extending from the searched area, along the "7th arc", to about the 32nd parallel south.

They also concluded (with several illustrations) that there was high confidence that they had not missed the debris in the existing search area.

In hindsight, I feel that the initial search should have focused on finding a debris field or pieces of wreckage rather than looking for the blackboxes. Each piece of wreckage found would aid drift analysis as well as provide clues of possible fire damage. Early in the search satellite images picked up objects floating in the sea. If the search focused on areas where debris was sighted by satellite imagery more debris may have been found than the twenty odd pieces found washed up on African beaches.
