Thanks NL - that is pretty damned good, especially on a wet Wednesday troubled by gout!

TBH I thought at first that it was one of those flight sim recordings as the image was so clear. Having watched it all the way through it is obviously a beautifully maintained and photographed aircraft.

Brings a tear to my eye

Very nice pictures. A shame about the faked Merlin sounds at the beginning.

I didn't realize that any Mark IXs had the small rudder.

Early Mark IXs did.

Having said that, BR601 did have the later wide-chord, pointy rudder when in South Africa:

However both the video and photo show it with the earlier elevators, suggesting that it would have been built with the small rudder too, and the larger one retrofitted at one point, but subsequently removed.

Yes beautiful views. And thankfully not filmed with those modern high shutter speeds, that make a turning propeller look like the scythes of the grim reaper.

Was the picture of the Spitfire you posted the one which was at the gateway of a scrapyard in Salt River, Cape Town in the 1970's?

If so I remember it well and have a photo of it myself somewhere.

Memories, memories.............

Yes.

Some more info, with a couple more photos of it on its pole at the scrapyard, here:

Nice to see it in 64 Sqn markings too.
