The FAA is offering a $500 rebate to help owners of less-expensive general aviation aircraft equip now with the required avionics. Starting January 1, 2020, you must be equipped with ADS-B Out to fly in most controlled airspace. Federal Regulations 14 CFR 91.225 and 14 CFR 91.227 contain the details. The program will run for one year from September 19, 2016 or until all 20,000 rebates have been claimed

Note ADSB 2, not ADSB, or ADSB 1... Did Oz get the memo with the 2??

Why offer $500 per owner / entity?
A minimal rule-compliant system costs approximately $2,000, plus installation costs. Equip 2020 performed a survey of aircraft owners and found that getting costs below $2,000 would encourage many price-sensitive owners to equip. The FAA chose $500 as an amount that would get the price down to that more-attractive range. This amount also maximized the total number of rebates the agency could distribute, based on total funding approved for the program.
