Lufthansa says auf wiedersehen to the Boeing 737

It served them well for 48 years but on Monday, at a ceremony held in Hamburg after special flight LH9922 arrived from Frankfurt, German carrier Lufthansa officially said goodbye to its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft.

Since taking delivery of the first Boeing 737-100 in 1968, Lufthansa has had a total of 148 B737s of various generations in its fleet. But the carrier says it will now offer continental service with a fleet of around 150 planes from the Airbus A320 family, including four new-generation A320neo aircraft.

Lufthansa was the first 737 operator, with the 737-100. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Don't remember that, but Airfix made a 1/144 Lufthansa 737 kit in the 1970s.

I had the privilege of visiting the first newly delivered -100 in the hangar at Frankfurt on 2nd June 1968. The Airways Flying Club were at nearby Egelsbach as guests of the Lufthansa Flying Club. A BEA Trident first officer with us learned of its delivery and asked if we could see it. I remember the Tardis-like impression when we boarded and saw the surprising number of seats, six abreast. The first officer also expressed delight at the simplicity of the two-pilot flight deck, so impressed in fact that he was on the first 737 course when BA got their first 737s on lease from Transavia.

I remember seeing the first 737s of Lufthansa at Amsterdam in July 1968 when on a school trip. Very exciting for a young spotter.
