Our local TV has reported that a special UN committee is investigating the use of the term "Leader of the Free World" and expects to make a formal designation. Potential candidates are President of France, Queen of England, Chancellor of Germany and the Prime Minister of Fiji.

The Queen would be nice, powerless person for worthless position.

Just like the UN to set this up--we should send them out of NYC to Siberia or NK and ignore them.

Vladimir Putin is establishing a good track record for freeing people from religious tyranny. On second thoughts, perhaps not the best nominee. If appointed he might just force the UN into becoming an effective force for world reform.

ah, once again, the UN thinking it is the "ultimate authority" on this planet. I do wish they would stop trying to tell everyone what to do.

Delusions of grandeur much?

well, in reality, they are nothing more than a mouthpiece for the USA.

From what I have seen the USA hates the UN with a passion.

The US is the most active UN member.

More like a mouthpiece for every tinpot dictator, left-wing nutter and worthless, overpaid failed bureaucrat that gets to live large in NYC. Kofi Annan comes to mind, as does Samantha Power. Sort like an EU Parliment for non-EU folks.

Yes, active, US taxpayers get to pay for all the free riders.

The UN, eh? Which bit?

ICAO, WMO, the ITU, UPU, UNWTO, WHO? All of which are indespensible to the aviation industry. Or is one of the 27 other organisations, research and training institutes?

If it's the security council and it's unelected permanent members, none of which could lead their way out of a paper bag, then it might make some sense.

Put please don't lump all of these bits and their dedicated and hard working employees, with the wankers.

How about a little attribution here?

GF, the US pays only 22% of all those free lunches. And they benefit significantly as the hq means many of those free lunches are purchased in NYC. Delegates from countries that pay little in dues do pay for their accommodation and other expenses while in NYC and maintain offices at their countries expense. Not all UN employees are tax-exempt, in NYC the majority pay their taxes to Uncle Sam. In GVA, to the Conferederation and to the Canton.

I'm sure they can find somebody from Darkest Africa and make him the Leader. Perhaps start with that 92 year old who once said "The only white man you can trust is a dead white man."

That would make a whole bunch of you all happy.

The United Nations has done an enormous amount of good in the world and continues to be a forum where even sworn enemies can be brought to the negotiating table. While not a perfect international regime, it's what we have. Don't knock it unless you have something better on offer.

No such person.

May as well be since everyone got fed up with the slaughter.

The UN is absolutely pointless as long as there are permanent members of the security council and they have a veto

I think she is Queen of England, just not exclusively. Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland, Canada, Australia & NZ are the first that spring to mind as other countries she is also Queen of. I think she has dropped "Empress of India" these days...

Vladimir Putin is establishing a good track record for freeing people from religious tyranny.

Only to subject them to political or military tyranny.

Well someone needs to step in! Seeing as there is no signs of leadership from the US of A these days.. Obama doesn't seem to have had much to say, even if he is on the run-down from his Presidency.

His replacements are still squabbling over who is the worst candidate and therefore Vlad Putin is free to do as he chooses. I can't see much chance of the US or even NATO being able to put up a No Fly Zone over Syria. Russia has all it needs in place to thwart one. They can seemingly act with impunity.

Today we are hearing reports of US Warships coming under attack off the coast of Yemen..

Not looking good really!
