The introduction of adsb in Australia will not include animated weather radar.I would like to know how much Airservices will save by not including this essential safety tool for Australian pilots. I believe NZ will provide this essential service as USA Canada Europe have done.

I've not heard there's to be any weather upload with ADSB here in New Zealand.

They have it in the USA on the 978 UAT ADSB system which is only used below 18,000 ft from memory. Basically I think the UAT system is deployed for GA and is only being used to help declutter the 1090 ES ADSB system.

Having the UAT system means running two systems and as far as I know UAT is only being deployed in the USA and perhaps Canada.

I've been told thev1090 system does not have the capability or capacity to upload weather.

Animated radar (versus airborne radar) needs to be treated with some caution. Several events in the U.S. have looked at just how current these animated radar returns are.

One event in particular resulted in a fatal accident, with investigators suggesting the pilot may have been diverting around animated radar that was effectively out of date.

Yes 27/09 1090esIN does not upload weather only the 978 IN band does this however dual band receivers are on the market. The problem is that Airservices are introducing half a system to save money. Also with a 978 band in the mix it declutters the system so ATC and RPT aircraft are seeing a safer and more reliable picture. In 2020 the US is removing ground based radar saving a Billion dollars so adsb animated radar must be a safe tool.

Led Zep .Ive had a look at aeris on the net ,Internet would be needed to display aeris weather in the cockpit and that will not do the job .We need adsb1090/978IN to provide GA pilots with reliable weather info in the cockpit through a dual band transponder.

Uplinked weather or any other flight information is NOT part of ADS-B. ADS-B is only aircraft ID, position, altitude and vector information for ATC surveillance purposes. What the US does with UAT is fallout from going with 2 systems requiring traffic to be rebroadcast and hence the ability to "piggy back" other data.

....in addition, it is not Airservices that saves money. It is the industry, who pay Airservices costs.

Dale Hardale, I am sure with any new system there will always be hiccups. ADSB is a new system that will transmit data once every second constantly updating the image , it will replace ground based radar systems in the US but not here.I am sure if Airservices introduced the full system they would save a lot of money in the longer term.

Daisy. I don't think radar animations have anything to do with ADSB!
The US NEXRAD weather is received via dedicated satellite providers!

Daisy0138: The 1090 ES system is not half a system, it is a complete system. 978 is another system.

To my knowledge nowhere else in the world to the USA has used 978.

I'm not saying it's a good or bad idea not to use it. Rather I suspect there isn't the enough need compared to the USA to justify installation of 978.

Just like we don't have the equivalent of Nexrad weather available, there isn't the critical mass to warrant the development of a similar system for this part of the world. Someone has to pay for it and I suspect the cost would be more than users will be prepared pay.

If you feel so motivated you could provide a service like Nexrad, it doesn't have to be provided by the likes of ASA. Note Nexrad isn't provided by the FAA.

27/09 yes Nexrad is not provided by the faa but it is provided by the US govt. ADSB. 978 is another band and in the US transponders are being sold using both 1090 and 978 in and out. I realise money is the driver behind Aus installing half a system. I think its short sighted policy. ADSB will be efficient if most or all of the aircraft install the transponders.If you give GA a service with traffic and weather then more will buy the units. Pilots in VMC will have more info than in the past and make better informed decisions. How many GA accidens have been caused by VFR pilots wandering into Imc.

The US is removing ground based radar and just about everything else with the introduction of ADSB. Eventually as ADSB rolls out in Aus all NDB stations are going I also believe VORs will go. Only ILS and primary radar will remain. I suspect following the US model of Adsb introduction will not be all that expensive and provide the affordable safety we all desire
