Can anyone tell me what US Govt. dept. overseas airline transgressions with delays and compensation, or lack of, for missed flights?
On a recent DL flight from LAX to SRQ (Sarasota, FL) via ATL, the aircraft departed LAX over three hours late, thus missing the last flight out to SRQ. Upon arrival at ATL, we inquired about hotel vouchers and were basically to to 'go away' as all hotels were fully booked. (Later changed to all hotels DL have a contract with were fully booked). The DL staff didn't seem to care if we spent the night on the floor in the terminal and and at 11:30 pm refused to provide any assistance in finding a hotel. After six attempts at the bank of hotel phones at the baggage claim area, we found a hotel with a room. However, upon arrival there the hotel did not have a room, there being some disconnect between the phone at the airport phone and the actual hotel. That hotel found us a room in a hotel 18 miles away and after a scary ride in a clapped out minivan with a differential about to disintegrate and the check engine light on, and a driver who couldn't read his phone GPS, we eventually had a room for the night.
Calls to DL the following day revealed DL does not reimburse pax for hotels that they book themselves or for taxi fares. However, after listening to our nightmare travel story, the agent offered 12,500 skymiles plus a $100 gift card. I would have preferred a cash reimbursement of the $170 spent on the hotel and taxis, not to mention an insane amount spent on costly airport food.
So, I would be interested to know what Govt dept. keeps tabs on wayward airlines in the US.
