View Full Version : Music/songs about flying

19th Sep 2016, 20:41
Being a bit of a Gary Numan fan I was just listening to 'My Centurion Dies'. A song he wrote after he had an engine failure in his Cessna Centurion. (Whether you like his music or not if you're a flyer it is worth listening to on Youtube....without wishing to be morbid it conveys exactly the thoughts/terror that would be going through your head on the way down!)

Anyway, it got me thinking....are there any other songs out there about flying?

Pink Floyd: "Learning to Fly"

Mike Oldfield: "Five Miles Out"

The Byrds: "Eight Miles High" Or was that about another experience...?

"Red Staggerwing" - Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris. Not really about flying, but does have "aviation content"!

Standby Scum

Elton John - Daniel "Red tail lights heading for Spain."

19th Sep 2016, 21:42
"Fly Me to the Moon" - Sinatra

"Leaving on a Jet Plane" - Peter, Paul & Mary

"Boeing Boeing 707" - Roger Miller:

Overcharge for excess baggage
Know your concourse, know your gate
Up this way sir, not that way sir,
Airplane departs gate six eight
Please sir may l see your ticket
Fasten your seat belt, you can't smoke
Beverage, anything you'd care for
Sorry but we're out of coke

Boeing boeing 707
Going, going skywardly heavenly
Higher than bluebirds fly
Why then oh why can't l

Destination de-plane slowly
Do this, do that, l comply
God bless Orville, God bless Wilbur
It's the only way to fly

Boeing boeing 707
Going, going skywardly heavenly
Higher than bluebirds fly
Why then oh why can't l

Boeing boeing 707
Going, going skywardly heavenly
Higher than bluebirds fly
Why then oh why can't l

Then of course, there's this one:

Albert Hammond: "It Never Rains in Southern California"

Turin - good memory!

19th Sep 2016, 22:04
Boeing Boeing 707? Hmm - seems to have morphed into a De Havilland DeHavilland Comet 2 in the video - wonder what that's all about?

19th Sep 2016, 22:18
Video creator doesn't know a Comet from a Boeing Boeing?

Night in the City - ELO

Standin' at the airport lookin' down the strip,
she was cryin' her eyes, she was bitin' her lip.
Seven-four-seven just left from gate eleven
and there's no turnin' round 'cos it's just leavin' the ground
and gettin' higher HIGHER.

Early morning rain - Gordon Lightfoot..... and covered very well by Paul Weller

Out on runway number nine
Big seven o seven set to go
Well I'm stuck here on the grass
Where the pavement never grows
Where the liquor tasted good
And all the women all were fast
There, there she goes my friend
She's rolling down at last
Hear the mighty engines roar
See the silver wing on high
She's away and westward bound
For above the clouds she'll fly
Where the mornin' rain don't fall
And the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home
In about three hours time

Elton John - Daniel "Red tail lights heading for Spain."

Not much of a connection there, like "when the BOAC lands"

20th Sep 2016, 09:40
The Barron Knights did a version of "Leaving on a jet plane"" called "Heaving on a jet plane"

"My bags were lost an hour ago,
You might have guessed, I'm at Heathrow..."

20th Sep 2016, 11:21
If I had the wings of a dove.

20th Sep 2016, 11:38
As a bit of background to two replies. Gary Numans dad was a driver for BOAC/BA and Gary was always an aviation 'nut'.

Elton John's Daniel was, I am led to believe, a reference to a 'close friend' who was cabin crew with BA. I flew with the said Daniel several times and his story did seem real.

Beatles Back in the USSR has nice reference to flying. ..."flew in from Miami beach BOAC...

Flying without Wings - Westlife

20th Sep 2016, 20:21
This Flight Tonight by Joni Mitchell, but not too accurate "Up go the flaps down go the wheels". There's an Amelia Earhart reference in another song.

Hedgehoppers Anonymous with "It's Good News Week" -- they were alleged to be serving RAF personnel when it was released. Now on OO-tube of course with the Cold War references.

There's an Amelia Earhart reference in another song.

Not just a reference, the whole song : "Amelia" on album Hejera

A ghost of aviation
She was swallowed by the sky
Or by the sea like me she had a dream to fly
Like Icarus ascending
On beautiful foolish arms

The is a good flying video attached to the song "Dopamine" from the Fused albumn by Toni Iommi and Glenn Hughes, on YouTube. Sorry, I can't work out how to get the link from the YT app on my android tablet. Search "dopamine iommi" and click the one with the over shoulder view of a jet pilot. It just plays it without showing a URL, there must be a way to grab the link?

When I was very young we had an old wind-up horn gramophone and a big heap of 78s. One of which was a song about Amy Johnson called 'Amy, wonderful Amy'. This included a voice over in newsreel fashion of a list of places that she had overflown between UK and Australia.
I still have the gramophone but my dad converted it into a toolbox. The 78...?

Slightly tenuous, perhaps. 'Stairway to Heaven' must be up there? It was by Led Zeppelin after all.

'Zoom' Fat Larry's band.

Sky Pilot......Eric Burdon and the Animals from 1968.
A must watch.
Bagpipes are awesome.
