A long shot but does anyone have any copies of photos of OS (aka as Ford Farm) circa First World War period? Aerial shots would be particularly useful. I'm after anything that shows the Belfast hangars and/or the technical buildings/squash courts.

Cheers.

Post-WW1, obviously, but a nice view of the hangars nevertheless:

1965 ish, as part of the Towers course we visited what ISTR was called the School of Land/Air Warfare, or the Joint Warfare Establishment at Old Sarum. don't recall any aircraft, but there was one peculiarity in the coffee bar. Part of the ceiling at one side of the room was lower than the rest, on the wall was what looked like a light switch. Inevitably, in an idle moment, some curious individual turned the switch "on". Cue whirring noises, a small hatch in the lower part of the ceiling opened and an arm with a group captain's sleeve on descended, turned off the switch and retreated into its housing, to stunned silence.

Interesting photgraph. I was an ATC gliding instructor at Old Sarum for 6 years around 1970 and I only once saw traces of the OLD SARUM on the middle of the airfield. It needed a critical combination of light and grass length.

Did you find the photographs you were looking for, BBE? We have a few, although not as many as we would like! You can see some on our new website (http://www.oldsarumairfield.co.uk/pre-and-post-war/)
