Calling all aviators who like sailing ... in reality or from your armchair!

Sailonline has an ocean race starting in a few days' time - it will shortly open for pre-race practice - so why not come and join us!

Race Info:

Welcome to the islands of the Pacific, whose original migrants arrived from Indonesia and reached as far as Hawaii and beyond. This Sailonline race, designed by SOLer Dingo, is a 2219nm segment of those original migration routes, and takes us from Beru Island in Kiribati to Bora Bora in Tahiti. As you enjoy the luxury of your GB90, spare a thought for those crossing these waters long ago in simple outriggers.

Do you sail? Do you race? Do you race inshore, offshore across oceans? If you do any of these things in reality, OR have done so in the past and hanker for more such adventuring, why not try Sailonline's (http://www.sailonline.org/)armchair equivalent.

What is Sailonline?

Probably the most realistic wind sailing navsim online - despite its somewhat old-fashioned UI - Sailonline takes you, in partnernship with many real yacht clubs/racing organisations (buddied races) or just through own-design courses, to pretty much every corner of the globe.

If you wish to learn how to use a sailing router, or even just the basics of sailing navigation for FREE ... then come and join in.

Current PPRuNe Flotilla

The following names will be given the PRU_ prefix for the race - for anyone new who wishes to join in our informal flotilla, just post a new message to this thread and I, as a volunteer Admin in Sailonline, will add PRU_ to your boatname just for this race (it has no impact on your Sailonline username or encrypted password).

So.. tell everyone you know, old or young, with a spirit of adventure who might like to try their hand at sailing navigation - with wind forecasts from NOAA updating 4x a day and released into the game every 10mins, this is the closest to realistic sailing windnav you are going to find!:ok:

The race is now open for pre-race practice.

At 1800utc today there will be an informal/sociable pre-race Practice Race and everyone is invited. These short 2-hr (or so) events are ideal for honing your virtual sailing skills AND of course to ask questions of those taking part. Just ask out in race chat!

Apologies for lack of input but medical kr*p is no respecter of one's need to race on Sailonline :-D

We had a great turnout this time ... here's our results (via Google+ images now so ... hope it works!):

There is the next leg of the RTWR starting on 1 October, opening soon for practice so... hope to see you all joining in there :ok:

brockie, I hope you are feeling better.

Congratulations to Wodrick.

An interesting race, which I did by "seat of pants" navigation - no routers. Miss_Saigon could have done better, except for running aground twice on SLIs.

Note to self - zoom in on the next six-hours of track, before going to sleep!

I don't see a picture in brockie's post, so here's a screenshot.

Congratulations to Wodrick.

Why thank you I42.
I find the router has it's place but into wind, particularly if blue, no help at all. Might be me however.
