I have flown into Calrsbad (McCellan Palomar Airport) quite a few times and you can hire from there. If you call in at or ring the pilot shop there they should be able to put you onto someone.

It quite handy place to get to a number of interesting areas as well.

Julian.

Not too far away is Air Desert Pacific in the LA Basin, very interesting flying and very good RT and Class C flying experience.
ADP are a pretty switched on crowd asfar as can be said for flying schools (sorry but it's true)

Theres an interesting group scheme at Montgomery airport in SD.

It called Plus One Flyers, they own about 30 aircraft and you pay $100 or so to join the group and then you can rent any of the aircraft. No daily minimum hours nice planes and as well as the usual cessnas they have a few duchesses and a mooney. Worth a try.

Yeh, 18greens is spot on the money with Montgomery Field. It's a great place to fly (busy class D under the SAN class B). There's a place called Gibbs there with several cheap clubs based there. Check out Montgomery Field (http://www.airnav.com/airport/KMYF) for the full story. The cheapest place there is Sorbi Flying club. They are so cheap even I cannot believe it.
