View Full Version : Does anyone have any information on Genesis re ASA and RAAF ATC?

See the article from The Australian by Cameron Stewart dated 10 September 2013 at this link (http://rosiereunion.com/file/The%20Australian%20-%20Genesis%20project.pdf).
Particularly note the comment by Angus Houston from 2002:
“Australia simply cannot justify, sustain or afford to continue operating two almost identical air traffic management systems.”
Note the term “management systems.” At the time, Sir Angus – he was Angus then – told me that the plan was to have the RAAF controllers move into ASA and be appointed to the Air Force Reserve. As we now know, that has now changed and they are going to try to purchase a combined ATC radar system – something that I understand has never been done anywhere else in the world.
Does anyone have any information on the project called Genesis? Was there a paper written, or was it stopped by the iron ring?

Airservices are having enough trouble consolidating their own terminal units let alone any Defence units. How much will the delay cost in extending house leases, temp housing, etc.

You really are clutching at straws Dick. It's called "air traffic management" because these days it's more than just air traffic control.

Because the RAAF controllers get deployed to places where bad people want to shoot at them! Try getting ASA controllers to deploy to Baghdad for 6 months with 2 weeks notice.

Are you suggesting that AsA controllers who were on the reserve would be not agree to go on such an operation?
Also there is any number of international contractors such as Cerco who will provide such a service.
And that type of operation is unlikely to happen in the future. The US voters are clearly fed up with lives being lost while attempting to assist others and then being blamed when things don't go the way they hoped.

If we start contracting out all military ATC services what's next? Why not get in contractors to do all the military jobs? Start with transport pilots, then move onto fighter pilots??
There is a reason we have a military and spend so much money on it... So when the time comes we as a nation do not have to rely on anyone else!

We have the military to fight the enemy.
Our enemies are unlikely to follow ATC instructions.
Angus Houston clearly believed it was a mis allocation of resources.

Oh come now, do we all believe there are no civilian contractors in war zones? Do we all believe that civilians are not capable of some of the jobs that military do? Where do you think members of the military come from? Straight from the womb?
The issues with ASA taking on the RAAF ATC's are that;
a. Civil ATC's get paid about double their military counterparts,
b. RAAF ATC's wouldn't know enroute control from a hole in the ground,
c. umm 'state aircraft'...
