Every now and again I am told that a program is slow due to a "long running script" What are they?

I could answer by saying "The Mousetrap", but http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie8-windows_7/how-do-i-fix-the-long-running-script-error-on-ie8/bf4caa13-6340-4f2d-95fd-e0ef5be3aa7b might be better.
