I attended the open day last May and thoroughly enjoyed it. I admire the volunteers who make it possible to see, hear and feel these wonderful British and other aircraft live and breathe again. I'd previously turned up on the off-chance when I was working in Northamptonshire once and Dave T and his brother kindly made it possible for me to visit the site without a great deal of fuss which is rare nowadays. If you haven't been I would highly recommend attending the next open day on the 28th of August. It has the feel of Airshows before they became too commercial and corporate, and although being primarily fast taxy, usually has some airborne displays as well.

Anyway I have a question for anyone from Brunty who is in the know please.

I was extremely jealous of the people deserving enough to pilot the fast taxys and wondered what the CAA rules are on who is allowed to do it? I know the Lightning pilot is ex-mil as is the Victor crew, but the lucky chap in one of the Buccs looked too young to have been on XV ?

All replies gratefully received thank you,

Rob

They are part of the team I believe, though the VC10 mob said they were working towards hopefully carrying some pax in the future during the runs.

I would also ask here as a lot frequent it.

Thanks NutLoose. Funnily enough I just messaged Brunty about the possibility of pax on the VC10 as I noticed there were some on last May. Cheers for the link too !

CAA rules don't apply - the aircraft don't fly.

That'll be Flt Lt Ollie Suckling. Current Tornado driver on 31 Sqn, member of the Buccaneer Aviation Group, part of the Jet Provost display team and occasional greasemonkey with the restoration of ZA326.

Would be great to see everyone at the open day at the end of the month - weather permitting we'll have the cockpits of Tornado GR.1P ZA326 opened up and available to sit in.

Thank you ZA326. I was curious as I could imagine being taught to slow taxy is one thing, but to open the taps on two Speys is something for the professionals!

I found this link which was helpful:

Lovely pics, thank you for sharing! Since then the rudder has been refitted and various other bits of tinkering have happened, so we're still moving in the right direction.

Fingers crossed for a bit more sunshine than your last visit - looked very grey.

p.s. Ollie's various biogs (there's another at Ollie Suckling | JP Display (http://jpdisplay.co.uk/ollie-suckling/)) all fail to mention his most vital skill... bacon and fried halloumi sarnie creation! ;-)

Good luck with the project, look forward the 199s being slotted in so we can see her alive and all enjoy a good rattling at the threshold!:D
