Madeira governante announced today, during the inauguration of an Hotel Pestana CR7 , downtown Funchal ,their decision to change the name of the airport “Madeira Airport " to “ Cristiano Ronaldo Airport”.
It is the third time that this happens there.
The first name of the airport was “Santa Catarina” because of its location, and that’s what happens in general around the world. The name of the airport is normally related to the place where it is located. On September 2000 , they changed to “Madeira Airport”. But the Madeira's president, Alberto João Jardim, initially manisfested his preference for “Cavaco Silva”, because he considered the best Prime Minister that Portugal ever had. But he didn’t accept.
So now it is the third time that they change the name, to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Here are, some examples of exceptions, like JFK in New York, Humberto Delgado in Lisbon (previously named Portela due to its location), Sá Carneiro in Porto .
Cristiano has a lot of value , so he has done and has excelled .
He is a humble person , no doubt .
He left very early in his parents' home at age 13 to come to a club in Lisbon, Sporting and from there , he was always growing .
But who fought for the airport was as it was the former president , there were many complicated lobbies of leftist parties , and even within the central government.
Everyone knows and knows the name Madeira Airport . That highlights the island itself.
I think it wasn’t necessary to change the name of this airport.

Although I admire him as a footballer and his connection with Madiera and how the island adores their home grown footballing superstar but I find it a ridiculous idea and what happens in 20 or 30 years time when he is faded footballer, it's not like JFK or CDG where the persons name lives on infamously.

It will always be Madiera Airport regardless of any name change which I find irrelevant.

I thought it was always & still is Funchal airport. Maybe I'm very outdated?

I wonder if the name change has anything to do with the fact he invested €40 million in the Pestana Group last year?

In all fairness as one of the greatest of all time CR7 will be in football folklore for a long time.

Plus it won't change much, it will still be Funchal on the departure boards.
