Watched 2 Chinooks from my back garden at 4.25 am today, westbound on H3. Much quieter than normal ie no blade slap even when they started climbing as they approached Bagshot VRP.
Is this a new mark?

You saw them? Fine waste of money they were then:ugh:

If they're the ones that woke me up a few minutes earlier, they're not *that* stealthy...

Maybe you've gone deaf and haven't noticed yet.

There has to be a logical explanation!

I guess the truth had to come out eventually.

Stealth Chinooks?

Now there's an oxymoron

Yes, long before you hear them, the dog barks and the house windows start to vibrate.

I neither heard or observed any Wokkas, yesterday this must be true!

Odd....I have been around many on our Flight Line forty Years ago....always immediately after i landed from a long day flying one. All the noise seemed to be funneled inside as they were sure louder in than out.

For Years the only way I could pass the Hearing Exam was by Hand Signals from the Nurse operating the Machine.

The dear lady retired and I lost my License.

I believe it was nothing more than a couple of defective volume switches for the speakers which have now been fixed.

Never mind the dog barking, Mrs Max goes mental when they come over the house in the early hours. It's like Pavlov's dogs. Not that I'm Pavlov;.....

Anything must be 'stealthier' than the 3-ship Squirrels from the secret Shropshire air base that went over FZ Towers yesterday - fair rattled the fillings http://cdn.pprune.org/images/smilies/thumbs.gif

Had a couple of V22 Ospreys over here this week, now they DO sound odd, odd enough to make me stop cleaning out the garage and look skywards.

You'll likely hear the CH-47 on approach before other helos because they can fly faster.

Another one last night about 10.30 pm heading south west obviously aiming for about 6nm final for the ILS on 27 at Odiham and again a distinct lack of 'chop'.

I can live with the noise of Chinooks as they at least sound like helicopters, but could someone ask the Army to put some oil in the gearboxes of their Apaches as they just sound like they about to throw a cog.

Heading north towards Otterburn yesterday on the A68, my kids and I saw 4 little bird helicopters with US Special forces hanging outside. As old as they are, we hardly heard a thing.

I flashed my headlights and we all waved. Two of them rolled about and one of the soldiers gave us the finger. How cool is that.

Consider: for some people it doesn't make you go blind after 99, but deaf.

Sounds like they fixed the volume as one was near Downing Street at 6 drowning out the new PM. :)

Obviously you can still read, then ... ;)

I've quite often heard some Chinooks at night. But, I never seem to see them visually!

So, obviously their cloaking device is working just fine..:ok:

Perhaps these "Stealth Chinooks" fly about accompanied by the "Stealth Blackhawks" used in the Osama Bin Laden mission? ( about as likely :) ).

Much of it is about the way you fly them. They're never going to be silent but a classic example is Op MAUD in 1991. Air Marshall Sean Reynolds (AMP), could probably fill in some gaps.

Boeing has been working on the Advanced Chinook Rotor Blade (ACRB) for a while now. If you look closely at the image below of the wind tunnel test blades you can see the asymmetric shaping at the tips, which should help reduce noise. These blades are part of the CH-47 Block 2 upgrade program, and I don't think any have been put in service yet.

While it's not a stealth Chinook, the BV-347 was still pretty awesome for a 1970's era rotorcraft.
