View Full Version : Can you get an MEIR without an MEP?

Just been flicking through CAP804, and came up with this one for you: It says that before you can do an MEIR, you have to have completed the MEP course (if you don't already hold an MEP) I can't find anything about actually passing the MEP test. Is it therefore possible to have an MEIR without ever having an MEP?

Another related question. If you have ATPL theory, CPL/IR and MEP can you apply for a job that requires you to have a CPL and MEIR?

Rude stuff - In theory, yes but what's the point? Right now, if you take the IR skill test in a ME aeroplane then it's only valid on ME aeroplanes. The only saving is the cost of the MEP skill test which, in the great scheme of things, is hardly significant.

GE115b - Yes, provided that the IR is valid on ME aeroplanes.

Thanks BillieBob, I'll be doing CPL IR and MEP on a Piper Seneca so the IR will be valid on MEs.

Many people who do the MEIR will go on to work for an airline, I'd imagine many will never fly an MEP again - so not bothering with it would save an hours rental plus examiner fee plus licence fee, a good £600 plus. Or an IR renewal.

BillieBob - are you certain an MEIR is only valid on ME aeroplanes? I thought it was only the SEIR that was limited to SE aeroplanes, but that the MEIR could be used on both ME and SE?

I'm pretty sure that MEIR gives you SEIR privileges, but not vice versa.

A MEIR confers SEIR privileges but a SEIR does not confer MEIR privileges.

You do not need to hold a MEP Class Rating before commencing the MEIR course but you need to have completed the 6 hours minimum training requirements for issue of a MEP Class Rating.

This is done immediately prior to the commencement of the MEIR training, and you then go straight on to the IF training.

The MEIR skills test includes both VFR and IFR phases of flight and the general handling phase will include all those elements that would be tested on a MEP skill test. The MEIR skill test in this case will include both the MEIR and MEP Class Rating.

Hope that helps.
