"Up to 82 workers hired to bolster security at Euro 2016 (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/euro2016/index.html) are on French terror watch lists, it has been claimed, as fears grow of an ISIS (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/isis/index.html)attack during the event.
French intelligence chiefs have screened 3,500 staff brought in to ensure the safety of fans at the tournament, which begins on Friday when host nation France takes on Romania.
The 82 people highlighted on watch lists could 'by definition' either belong to a terror group or have a background of 'questionable behaviour or extreme beliefs on either the left or right', it has been reported." DM

While Hollande is right to state that ISIS et al should not intimidate us into changing our normal way of life, you really have to ask yourself twice whether it is worth the risk of attending what is, after all, a totally optional event.

Except of course to many of us football is much more important than life & death(!) :}

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that." - Bill Shankly

Even though it didnt stop us, I must admit I was aware of the potential threat on my many visits to old Trafford and Wembley last season. The Bournemouth game was a bit scary when it was happening, we got held back in the stadium without knowing what was happening.

Although I hope not, I think that some sort of terrorist event is more likely or not.

France has already been hit and with some ISIS people determining that football is 'un- Islamic', the occasion is likely to prove too tempting.

Don't faint, but, we are in agreement here. well in part at least....;)

The part of your statement I would disagree with is that you attributed them with the capacity to think......a trait not really prominent when applied to the "beautiful game".

No matter.....those deeply ingrained genetic dispositions were always going to emerge given half a chance.

I like the "rationale " offered however.....the bit about " only singing and being boisterous".....and being teargassed three times !....and, it's all the fault of the French police....gosh, who would have thunk it !...."Ingurlund" fans being little paragons of virtue and innocence after all .....

My understanding is that UEFA sanctions can only apply to trouble inside the ground.

I cannot understand how a national association can be held responsible for lunatics who purport to be fans. The obvious reaction by the morons is to wear the national shirt of any team you want out of the competition and cause trouble.

Missed it. I guess the coffee hadn't set in.

I am glad that hooliganism is a phenomenon of 80s and 90s (sarcasm). One of the problems mentioned by GE is that one can ban violent people from the stadium, but you cannot ban them from the outside.

I bet some of those battle ground places were coordinated by social media, which makes me think that this ghetto/anti-social behavio(u)r is only on the rise.

The decline of Western Civilization?

I think that UEFA "thinks" that the perk is: if you behave, you can watch a game. If not, not so much (instead of "ghost games").

Euro 2016: England and Russia given disqualification warning - BBC News (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36510550)

"UEFA has threatened to disqualify England and Russia from Euro 2016 if there is any further violence by fans. It has begun disciplinary proceedings against Russia - but not England - after "totally unacceptable" scenes at Saturday's England-Russia game........Charges against Russia are for crowd disturbances, racist behaviour, and setting off fireworks, Uefa confirmed......

In a strongly-worded statement, European football's governing body said it would not hesitate to impose sanctions on either Russia or England should such violence occur again. Measures included the potential disqualification of their respective teams from the tournament, it said......

Sanctions against Russia will be decided at a disciplinary meeting on Tuesday, Uefa said.

BBC sports editor Dan Roan said as hosts of the 2018 World Cup, Russia was under intense scrutiny. UEFA's decision would also come under scrutiny, he said, with Russia's next match against Slovakia taking place in Lille on Wednesday - the day before England's match against Wales just 24 miles away in Lens.....

Trained and organised Russians behind Euro violence

Euro 2016: 150 Russians 'behind' violence - BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-36515213)

Mr Robin told a news conference: "There were 150 Russian supporters who in reality were hooligans. These people were well prepared for ultra-rapid, ultra-violent action. These are extremely well-trained people."
This was what made it difficult to arrest them, the prosecutor said, adding that he did not think the Russian hooligans were "professional" but that they "were extreme".
Backing comes from the top...

But Russian MP Igor Lebedev criticised French police and called on Russian football fans to "keep up the good work".
"I see nothing wrong with football fans fighting. On the contrary, well done to our boys! Keep up the good work!" he tweeted (https://twitter.com/Russian1972/status/742256350424641536).
