Can anyone advise on bringing duty free into Asia via Singapore or Hong Kong?
Originating in Johannesburg with final destination Kuala Lumpur.
I have promised a few bottles of KWV brandy to friends and I don't want to disappoint them.

Don't know about this route specifically, but in Europe the Duty Free shop in Airport A should pack the bottles in a sealed, transparent bag with the receipt inside and clearly visible. When you go through security in Airport B, they will read the receipt, check everything is as it should be and clear it through. Do not open the bag until your final destination.

If you are buying the SA brandy in a bottle shop in Joburg, pack them securely in your checked bags which are loaded in the hold, and when you check in in Joburg have the bags through checked to KL. That of course only applies if you are routing through to KL with no stop overs en route.

You can now buy special bags for trasnporting bottles. They are of thick plastic with triple sealing tops so, if the bottle breaks, nothing leaks. You then pack them in suitable clothing. There are more expensive bags with bubble-wrap built in. I used the type earlier this year and all was fine, including a transhipment at SIN. We also had some wine that was in the second type of bag, as supplied by the winery, they were also fine but not resuable.

I was in Singapore during 2010.

They do not permit the bringing in of duty free cigarettes, these must be declared and an import duty on them paid upon arrival.

P.S. I didn't know and my 200 cigarettes stayed inside my bag and nobody bothered me.

Thank you for the useful advice, I have also goggles the subject, now whilst Singapore and Hong Kong follow the European practice as stated in post #2 the problem starts in Johannesburg.
Per the O R Tambo website their tamper proof packaging does not meet International Aviation Security Standards.
So I'll have to make another plan for my KWV brandy.

Put it in your checked bag in bubble rap.

Depending on the airline, they may sell it on board, and they will have the correct packaging.

KL have a limit of one litre of spirit per pax. (when I was last there beginning of May 2016).
