I was recently looking at approach plates for O'Hare and noticed that there was a "Vulcan" reporting point not far from the location of the former Glenview NAS. Does anyone know if this is a tribute to the Vulcan crew lost there in 1979? If so, what a nice gesture.

It was 1978.

VULCN waypoint (4205.51N 08747.65W) is indeed very close to the Northbrook crash site of XL390, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's why it was so named.

Hopefully for that reason rather than named after the Vulcan Materials Company?

BB, Of course it was. I stand corrected.

Unfortunately, I think not. There are a few others in that area that give the game away....

KURKK, SOOLU, VULCN and If memory serves TREKI exist as well.

If that is the case, and it probably is, it's a strange coincidence.

VULCN is on the app to KORD 22R, KURKK, SOOLU and TREKI are all on the app to KORD 14L, KURKK being closer, TREKI the further.

Slightly related (in true PPRune fashion), the RNAV 16 approach at Portsmouth, New Hampshire (KPSM) has the following waypoints:

ITAWT - ITAWA - PUDYE- TTATT- IDEED

Two's In, laundry bill to follow getting tea stains off my bedding.

At least it proves there is some humour in official US world.

Try GAFFA : I believe it is somewhere near Alice Springs and "Great Australian F--k all" springs to mind.

I think if GAFFA existed it might now have gone,

but to their credit the Aussies do have:

SAILS and KEELS offshore from Perth, down the E110 meridian there's

WONSA-JOLLY-SWAGY-CAMBS-BUIYA-BYLLA-BONGS

and inland, down the E 120 meridian we have my favourite:

WHOOL-WINDA-WILAM-WHEBB-ELLIS-TROFE..

Orlando Fl. USA has the Goofy and Minnie arrivals.

Slightly unrelated/related, but I always wondered why Orlando has the code MCO (until I checked). It refers to a General McCoy who was apparently a very popular CO in the 1950s but was tragically killed in an incident in a B47, and then then Air Base was named after him. The McCoy name lives on as MCO and also some road names to this day.

It was a 617 (Dambusters) aircraft so you could contact them to confirm.

"Gaffa" indeed does exist or did in 2002 when I flew over it/
