Hand propping. How many this year have you done and on what typ

Looking to talk to frequent hand proppers on technique used and on type.

250 starts this year on DH82a Tigermoth.
Let me know of your amount this year and type, will be interested to find out any issues and solutions. My goal is to understand more and to help others. ( 6 years and 5000 plus starts.)

Well after all of your experience, I don't know what I could pass on....except to say that I always start my DH-82 from the rear.

That way the switches are in easy reach and by using one of the 'top' struts, there is no tendency to 'lean into' the prop. which, with a bit of luck is about to become a 'whirling scimitar'....

I use the same for the Chippy.

Only ever done a couple of handstarts. A 260hp lycoming on a Bongo van about 25 years ago and a 235hp Lycoming in a Pawnee about half a dozen times. Also years ago.

I did see a shocking start a while a go.

The guy was wearing a lanyard and a hat whilst starting. Guess what, his hat came off and as he bent down to get it, he narrowly missed being chopped to pieces.

Saw a guy hand start his Midget Mustang, then turn around to reach inside to adjust the throttle, but lifted his leg back like a ballet dancer to balance... which brought his foot within an inch of the spinning prop. He never knew until I told him, he had been starting successfully for years.

I suggest you google rope starting a DC3

My dad said it was standard practise in the RAAF when the battery went flat.

The best I've ever done was a C210, and that scared the day lights out of me.

These days if I get stuck I call the NRMA who are quiet amused when they arrive to find an aircraft

Went on about the 4th go from cold.

This year, half a dozen or so on Taylorcraft BC65 and a couple on Porterfield. Both with Continental A65. Start from front with pilot in cockpit.
From cold, 4 shots of prime then go. Normally 2nd or 3rd swing sees a start.


Previously, hundreds with VW in Corby Starlet, Gipsy in Tiger & Auster. These 3 from behind the prop to reach switches & throttle., aided by rotation direction
